After the AW ordering debacle, i finally got through one of the tech guys (servicing the ANZ corridor) who was able to get my M17r3 replaced or refunded.

My qs. to you guys is

my Processor will be upgraded from 2720qm to the 2760qm
my GPU 6970M will go to the 6990M
and the intel 6300 will upgrade to the killer Wireless N

    Concerns

i know the perf.delta b/w the 6970m and the 6990M isnt a whole lot.....BUT....how hot does it run (am i gonna need to make mods to help this issue out). I already take precautions so...when i am at home its on a Zalman cooler and elsewhere i make sure the fans can "breathe".

i also remember reading on NBR, that guys were having issues with the wattage the 6990M is chewing through, and had concerns for their adaptors....again....is that a problem

Battery life....(max savings) i can eke out a good 4.5 hours (wtih wifi) on the 2720qm..... any figures on battery use

i kinda liked the intel 6300...primarily because (as i understood) i could use the WIDI capability when using the HD3000....and had an OK reception with the AAEB (airport extreme gen.4)...will this be better at range and speed?

I have an M18X with 6990s and have no heat issues. Played BF3 last night for about 30 mins and 71C was as hot as it got. Haven't seen wattage issues that I know of. And I have a 2820 and on integrated I get about 4 hours with half brightness. Battery is awesome on the iGPU.

Outside of the video card this isn't much of an upgrade. The new chips are all they ship now so this is a given, the Killer cards are on special so it probably costs them nothing(I have the 6300 and it's a very nice card) but I don't know of any reason to detract you from taking it given I haven't looked at the specs. The battery life is tied more to the wattage than clock speed so since they are the same you should have no changes. The debate about higher burst is balanced with lower up time and is one that's still being debated even with SSDs. AKA gonna be hard to say, so don't work about it. I say you make them discount the machine(give you money). Did you get a 1080P screen or maybe an upgraded warranty? Getting an upgrade there should be easy given the mishap. If not that's what you should go after not upgrades that are now standard.

interesting.....well the "debacle" i mentioned started with the order of the m17's with the 460M, machine 1 had issues with optimus, machine 2 had issues with build quality and optimus...then i changed my rig to get the 6970...which then had a USB fail on me and the mobo and spkr were replaced..... and now (apart from the fact the rest of the rig runs beautifully) the sound card gives me grief..... occasionally.....

apart from the upgrades i already have

the FHD screen, 8GB, 2x750gb's, bluray, and 3 yrs complete warranty

i dont know...or how to ask for anything else.....i really dont want the 18", cuz i would like some "semblance" of portability (it's heavy enough asd it is...but man its a great machine....so

can u tell me how i can "threaten" a true upgrade....because in it's present config...(and please don't scream) it was 2800AUD...for the config they are going to give me it's close to another 1K AUD

PS i do have a 6300 i bought of the net and worked it in my DV5T when the bios was whitelisted.....it's a good backup :)

@massey....dude you have the 18x that's 3 fans to the m17's 02 fans...i am sure the cooling is more beefier in the m18 as opposed to the m17

@OP, is there a reason why they're giving you 6990+2760? Or is it cuz that's what they have now, and no longer offer the old stuff? So if I were to need a repair/replacement, they'd give me the same? I'm under 3year complete care warranty fyi (not sure if that's relevant).

    Thx!

@dookie-it's not relevant-JK -they are prolly giving him a new system which would come with a 2X60 series CPU as opposed to our 2X20 CPU. Know what I mean??

@OP-They are giving you something better than waht you had which is thier policy-like or better. Gonna be an uphill battle to 'argue'for more, IMO

6990 is way better than 6970: at least 20% better...then you add a nice 15-20% OC on the GPU and 50-60% OC on the ram, and the 6990 becomes quite potent

going from a 2720 to 2760, you get another 200mhz in turbo speeds. Its still an upgrade but not huge, the 2760 is the current GPu as the 20's are discontinued

So in terms of getting mine serviced in future, are they going to just give me exact replacement of 2720 and 6970? Or will I get bumped to current offerings (e.g. 2760 and the 6990) cuz they're no longer carried on the R3 config page?

yeah dookie, i have the 3yr complete warranty too...and (atleast) on the Aussie website they only have the 2760qm and the 6990....so i guess they don't carry the "older" hardware anymore..... so yes..if you had a problem with your rig, and they had to replace stuff they would infact give you the hardware which is a closest match to your existing (original) hardware...although, since you guys are in the US and have somewhat of a (better deal) than us aussies...you might even upgrade to the next gen hardware if this rig goes pear shaped and can't be fixed

That's good. Nothing's wrong with it so far. Great warranty though, I must say.
