I would like to uninstall my current driver for my radeon card and then uninstal catalyst center. Then reinstall the most up to date versions. Can you tell me the safe way of doing this? Can I do this all on my radeon card or do I need to switch to integrated card?

Here's an article that you can use as a guide for the process...after step 7, do the following:

-Open the Start Menu, type “regedit” in the searchbox and press <Enter>.
-In the “Registry Editor” go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE
-Look for a folder named “AMD” or “ATI”, right-click to delete it.

And then continue on step 8 :)

There's no need to switch cards.

I deleted my AMD graphics driver. When I restarted the computer it automatically reinstalled the driver again. Should I delete it again, and repeat doing this, until it no longer shows up? Reading the article they say "repeat process until ... ", I take that to mean that I need to do this multiple times?

yes, try that again and when the system restarts and you see the pop up on the bottom right hand corner that says that device driver is being installed, click on that several times till it opens and click on "skip". After you do that, go to programs and features again, delete any AMD files again, then on the start menu type: device manager. Open the device manager and find the Display adapters, click on the "+" sign next to it and if the AMD driver is still installed there, right click on it and select "uninstall", when the uninstall box pops up, check the box that says "delete all information for this driver" and continue with the uninstall.

Also, go to Computer>OS (C: )>Program Files and delete any AMD files there.

    I have deleted my driver.

Now how do I install the newest one for my Radeon video card? When I click on that support link Dell does not show me the required driver for my system. I just manually selected the ATI Radeon driver from their list but I am worried it may be for a different Raden video card, is that possible? Thank you.

dell driver page, enter service tag if you want
what is your amd card model (6000m, etc.), knowing this I could help more? Dell rarely releases updates for drivers for cards unless they are of great importance (so there is likely no update), however if you have an amd 6990m you can update the card by installing the m17xr4 amd 7970m card drivers from the dell page here. Dell does not mention it (idk why) but this also includes updated drivers from dell which can be used for the 6990m, I have personally used them for about a month with NO overheating or performance issues and slightly increased performance. However, if you want to just install drivers from amd you can download them from their sites

    ATI Radeon
(PLEASE READ RELEASE NOTES TO MAKE SURE YOUR AMD CARD MODEL IS SUPPORTED BY DRIVER, OTHERWISE IT COULD LEAD TO SCREEN DISPLAY PROBLEMS)
(I am running 12.6 whql not beta 12.7)

If you have a 7970m 12.6 drivers wont work for you, as release notes say they are only for up to 6900m series. 12.7 beta is said to work for 7970m, but I found these drivers to be too glitchy with installing and also got many issues with games using these, so I dont recomend using them, but wait until the 12.7 whql come out). And the process for doing this with official amd drivers is mentioned on the link to my previous post, which in my experience is the most comprehensive guide in installing drivers. Hope this helps.

    Hello,

According to my purchase information this is the graphics card my laptop came with:
    2GB GDDR5 AMD Radeon HD 6970M

I am currently downloading the following driver from the internet. Should this work?
Drivers and Downloads | Dell [United States]

yes, that would be the correct driver for a 6970m, but is just the stock ones (the ones which the laptop had when you first received it) it would not be an update, also once just to be sure go to "device manager" (click windows start button and search for it if you are unsure of where it is) and see what is listed under "display adapters" category. I believe the 7970m dell drivers mentioned in my previous post will also work for your 6970m, but I am not 100 percent sure. only other way to update is through official amd drivers like I mentioned in the previous post. also are you under warranty?

I am no longer under warrany. I had a basic 1 year one and it was over one year.

I am in the middle of still installing the 6970m from the internet. Is it possible that once I download it (I guess it is the Catalyst one) that I can update it from there using the AMD website?

What if I download 7970m driver and it does not work on my 6970m? Do I simply just delete it and use 6970m driver installation? Is there any harm in trying the updated driver for more increased performance as it does not actually the same driver?

Hi, this is the latest driver for the 6970m. I installed it a few days ago.

    AMD Catalyst

Notice it is for a desktop card but if you scroll down, you will see it is for 6000m series cards too.

Install the Dell drivers first and then install these straight over the top.

Since your warranty is over there is a risk in your system experiencing a possible problem during this process of installing drivers, as the process may get complicated, so you should be cautious before proceeding further and be aware that there will no longer be dell support. While I have some knowledge on driver updates, as I had to overcome many issues, I am no expert and probably could not help with advanced issues, so follow this at your own risk. Also do you really feel the need to upgrade drivers, stock ones are decent, and unless you are playing latest games in high details and dx11, I really think that driver update would not be neccessary.

http://forum.notebookreview.com/alienware-m17x/610780-m17x-r3-driver-problem-6970-a-2.html (Go to the post by "The Revelator" which gives installation steps)

well in terms of compatibility since the 7970m driver on the m17xr4 page is a part of dell you should have no problems with compatibility in driver signature, I believe the 7970m driver should work for the 6970m, as I have successfully used it for my 6990m, and the two cards (6970m and 6990m) are similar. Before you install the 7970m driver (if you want to) you should completely uninstall the 6970m drivers which you are installling now. If you only want to try and install the 7970m drivers follow the post in the link I provided, up to the THIRD BULLET POINT (running cc cleaner), then installing the dell m17xr4 7970m file ( here), this is intermediate risk.

or you can try and install the official amd drivers from here (use 12.6 official ones, as release notes indicate that it is compatible with 6900m series), if you do this follow the above link instructions by "The Revelator" through AS MANY BULLET POINTS as you need to(read through it entire post once and you will understand what I mean, if installation is successful after certain bullet points you can stop, as pointed out in the post). This does however have a higher risk of possible issues on your computer.

NOTE: in instructions in the link post it mentions 11.8 whql, that was current official amd driver at the time, now it would be 12.6 whql drivers, just a name change.

HiJackThis, if you choose to install official amd drivers you may want to try this by Joe85, personally I found 12.7 beta to be glitchy and improperly working (possibly a greater risk), however you both have a 6970m, and so it may be more functional for you, however I still recommend following installation instructions link from my post.

Two things i noticed using this driver. 1, and most importantly, BF3 is running fine. 2, the Aero bug is back.

Other then that, no problems that i can see.

I played it safe and downloaded the Dell driver. However, I think my FPS rates have not improved. I recently had an FPS drop a few days ago even on simple games that I never had before. I thought that if I uninstalled and installed the driver it would fix the problem.

Well you have only got stock drivers.

Have a go and install the drivers in the link I provided. You dont have to unistall anything, just go straight over the top of your current drivers.

    Its 100% safe.

In any event, if its not to you satisfaction just roll back with Windows restore. But like i said, i have the same card as you and these Drivers are fine.

I just want to be sure but when you say the "dell driver" you mean the one for the m1xr4 7970m, on the link I provided? Well I am not sure why i did not work if it installed correctly, I noticed improvements when I did it (subtle but were there) and definitely no fps drops. I think there are only three options left then...

1 to uninstall the 7970m m17xr4 drivers which you currently have installed, and then try to reinstall them (remember to do the FIRST THREE BULLET POINTS on the link with the instructions post). and then see if there is any improvement after re installation, and post it back here.

2 to try and install official amd drivers 12.6 whql by following AS MANY BULLET POINTS as needed on the installation instruction post (but as I previously said this is more risky).

3 finally to uninstall currently installed drivers (following FIRST THREE BULLET POINTS) and to now install stock 6970m drivers from dell, which were what it had out of the box
Drivers and Downloads | Dell [United States]
    (these are stock drivers)
this should return performance back to original state.

This is all I can further recommend, hope this helped
