    Hello all,

I received my R4 today and I am loving it. I did a clean install using the guide but after I completed everything, I checked device manager and saw an "Unknown Device" under Other devices.

I try to investigate and it is pointing to the Pci Bus. This specific driver is not mentioned in the guide nor is it on the Dell R4 drivers website.

    Any help?

I have it as well, I believe it was some Intel management thing.
IIRC I had the drivers installed, until I deleted Intel management.

doesn't it bother you? After you did a clean install did you re-enable the Windows automatic driver installation?

Had the same thing, install your chipset drivers and that should clear it up.

    Thanks for your response.

I already installed all the drivers by the order following the guide. Do I need to re-install the chipset drivers?

Arai hit the nail on the head. It's the Intel Management Engine Interface. It's mainly use for remote access technology and you probably have no real use for it. I've left it off my system with no adverse effect but if you are OCD about it, installing it won't hurt.

edit: Dell Intel Management Engine Interface

Thanks for the info. As stated on the guide, this is #3 on the instal order list.
I did install this driver. Do I have to re-install it?

Hmm...I would try uninstalling the version that you had already installed first and then reinstall again.

I can. I'm just worried that it might screw up some drivers since the order of installs will not be the same anymore.

Did you get this problem before? Did re-installing the chipset driver work for you?

It shouldn't be an issue as long as you don't uninstall the Intel HM77 Panther Point chipset drivers. Just uninstall the Intel Management Engine.

I ran into the same issue when I upgraded from an Agility 3 to the Performance Pro and had to reinstall Windows. I decided to just leave the Intel Management Engine off my machine.
On a related note, you may want to check you Windows Update, under optional updates, you may see Intel Management Engine there.

I had to install it again after doing it in the order posted in the guide. Not sure why that is, but as I said, it did clear it up for me.

The other posters are probably right, you probably don't need it. I guess I'm just OCD though and don't like having a $2000 computer with unknown devices on it.

I tried reinstalling the Intel Management Engine and rebooted. I'm still getting the Unknown Device.

In Device Manager, under system devices, is there a device listed as "Intel(R) Management Engine Interface" in addition to the unknown device?

Nope. There is only one Unknown Device. If I open it it points to Pci Bus. I'm not sure if this is part of the Intel management driver or it could be something completely different.

Tonight I will try doing a clean install again but this time all the drivers that I will be installing I will run them as administrator.

I'm very sure that that unknown device is the Intel Management Engine. See if you have Intel Management Engine in your Windows Update. With my R3, I don't have the IME installed but it's in my Windows update under optional updates.

I hadn't thought of that, but that could be it. In Device Manager, that's listed as "ST Micro Accelerometer".
    + rep when I can :)

try the OSD application, I think that was one that I had installed to remedy the "Unknown Device" issue and it fixed it. It should be under the Applications on the Dell website.

Better yet, can you just post a couple of screenshots of your Device Manager and open up a some of those device drop downs? That may make it easier to pinpoint instead of all of us shouting random solutions.

It may be optional, but it will show Unknown Device if the driver is not installed. Do you need help installing a driver?

What I do when this happens is go to the details tab of the item in question in the Device Manager. Look at the Hardware ID or Device Instance Path and so on until I find an identifier that shows up in a google search like "ACPI\PNP0200\4&29017A22&0". Usually by fishing through the results for a few minutes I can at least ascertain what type of device it probably is based on trouble reports or other things that people post on the internet. This clues me into what driver I have not installed. It's not the most scientific method but it works for me.
