Hi, I bought a AW17 R1 with an I7-4700qm and a dead 860m. Bios is A15 and Screen FullHD 60Hz. I want to upgrade to a Zotac ZBox GTX 1070 or 1080. Do I need an unlocked Bios or not?

Unlocked BIOS makes it easier but its not required.

I think you should be able to downgrade to A14+ but I havent personally done it so I am not sure on that side of things.

You would have to ask @javers but I dont really recommend it, spectre / meltdown fixes lose about 10% performance

A Little Update. The Zotac GTX 1080 arrived yesterday. The card was shown in the Bios as Nvidia GFX. But to fully test the card I have to modify the chassis and the Heatsink.

So now I installed the 1080. But after I installed the moddriver, Code 43. 391.35 Nvidia Driver. Do you think the card is damaged?

Code 43 may also appear due to an incompatible vBIOS though.

Nearly all known 1080's have been tested, all result in power throttling as a result of the mxm slot not being able to deliver enough power to the card.

You are not going to get it working simply via flashing some other vbios, this has been tried and documented in the forum.

You will need to route external power to the card something akin to the p870dm-g modification.

Now I have a Zotac GTX 1060 and tried to install it. But everytime I get the Faultcode 43. I changed The VBios with 2 different MSI Versions. But nothing helped. GPU is dead?

You really need to stop swapping vBIOS as your first method of trial and error.

    Thats not an relevant detail.

First you try everything else, then try vbios, especially since you dont have a programmer to fix it if you do a bad flash.

Now I tried Zotac GTX 1080, 1060 and a Quadro P4000. With every card I get Code 43. But yesterday I installed the Quadro P4000 in my MSI GT70(Erazer X7825) and the card works fine with Mod inf.
Are there any settings in the Bios or something else I have to change?

Provide details of your current BIOS settings.

GTX 1080 will not work regardless of settings, laptop does not provide enough power from the MXM slot.

I have switched from legacy to UEFI and back. Nothing changed. What more details you want to know? It‘s not an unlocked Bios.

OS, legacy option setting, uefi setting.

If you intend peg or SG mode both of which are available to locked bios just as to be done via command center Fn key

They matter for how you intend to use the gpu, SG mode had less restrictions but also loses performance compared to peg with more restriction in order to function correctly.

I'm sure there is more detail needed for installation but your settings are needed first or were just stabbing in the dark.

That's how they are labled in the bios but otherwise it would just be dgpu and Optimus.

For all intents it doesnt function as desired to even a low threshold. Technically, it works, functionally, it does not.

Now if someone were to supply power from the motherboard or from an external source then things can get seriously interesting.
