Hi, I recently bought The Witcher 2 off of Steam. It was running fine, but was a little slow (which is a common issue for this particular game), so I went to the Nvidia website and downloaded and installed the newest driver for my GTX680M. The install went smoothly, but in every game, after usually between 10-20 minutes of play time, the game slows down to a crawl. At first I thought that it was JUST an issue with the Witcher 2, but every game I tried after does this. For some games, I alt + tab out and wait about 20 seconds, then re open the window and it runs fine again for about 5 minutes before slowing down.

I recently dusted out the fans in my laptop (tons of dust) and have yet to test anything, but I was mostly curious as to what else can cause this sort of behavior.

My system is an Alienware M17x R4 Laptop

    Processor: Processor Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-3720QM CPU @ 2.60GHz, 2601 Mhz, 4 Core(s), 8 Logical Processor(s)
    Memory: 16GB
    Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680M

    Thanks.

Try rolling back to the previous driver through the device manager and see if that helps.

Yeah, I've seen a lot of this over in the NV forum. The latest WHQL is causing havoc like yours. Usually just running the installer from the earlier one and selecting clean install works for me :)

If those don't work you can also try a system restore to a date it was working better.
