Aaah, so this is the first Dell release of the M17x and not the M17x R2.
When you said drivers I think you meant video drivers as in the last two versions nVidia forgot to add the IDs of a few cards.
You'll basically need to download all other drivers from Dell's support site (except video drivers). See order of installation in this thread that also suits your current status:
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/ali...er-install-order-guide-alienware-systems.html

As for video drivers download this version:
    http://www.nvidia.com/object/notebook-win7-winvista-64bit-270.61-whql-driver.html

Also, do you have two GTX 260M?

    @Zoolian: he has the M17x not the M17x R2.

    because:
    M17x: has Core2Duo/Quad processors,Socket P (i.e. QX9300) with GPUs like: nVIDIA GTX 260M/280M and ATi mobility 4870

    M17x R2: has first generation i5/i7 processors,Socket 989 (i.e. i7 940xm) with GPUs like: nVIDIA GTX 285M and ATi mobility 4870 and 5870

M17x R3: has the 2nd generation i7 processors, Socket 988B (i.e. i7-2820qm) and GPUs like: nVIDIA 460M and 580M and ATi mobility 6870 and 6970 to this date.

It depends on what you want to upgrade, it's nice to upgrade thru Dell because of one thing: warranty, but parts are expensive that way, it'll come cheaper if you purchase them on your own and have someone (or you) to install them.

Hey everyone, long time reader but never posted. Anyways, I have an R1 aswell with two 260M. Anyways, Im just wondering what parts are worth upgrading (same specs as before except the 260M) and what parts I can install myself, not looking to pay the high prices from dell. I was looking at the Intel 320 SSD 120GB that start but aside from that what else?

Hi, Joey, i don't know your current specs but here are the best parts you can get for your laptop:
    - SSD -definitely worth it (buy a SATA II)
    - CPU: QX9300 extreme\unlocked CPU
    - GPU: nVIDIA 280M or ATi mobility 4870 (your current heatsinks and fans are compatible, the same), newer GPUs were never tested except the mobility 5870 which are a no go.
    - the M17x R2's RGB Led screen is compatible too ;)

Intel SSD are known for their reliability so that's a good choice, i think.
    QX9300 listings:
    QX9300 | eBay
    As for RAM get 2x4Gb of 1333 DDR3 SO-DIMMs.

It's. Not a good idea to upgrade through dell unless you have long system warranty left.

If you have long system warranty left, upgrade parts will carry your system warranty , if not only 90 says from day of purchase .

    I meant laptop model.
    Is it a m17x or a M17x (lowercase m matters).

Does anyone have a source for the newest R2 drivers anyways? Dell's are outdated if you compare to what ATI has released for the 5870's, Intel's Wireless N driver is far past Dell's, etc. I know some have compatibility issues with Dell/Alienware's changes according to their sites(Intel mentions it for the Wireless N driver in their tool). And what bios are we up to? I think last I did was A09.

Only important thing to note, have the quad instead of the extreme(Too rich for my blood XD).

And any tips on helping speed up the system? Feels a big sluggish depending on what I do.

    Good question.
Pretty hard to find but you can:
    - camp e.bay
    - call Dell see if they have any(expect a huge price  if any in stock)
    - buy a low specced R2 with the screen and sell the rest.

    That's all i can think of :)
