    Currently I use Alienware M17X R1 with:

    Quad CPU 9000 2.00GHZ
    GTX 260M single

Now I want to update this. What max of CPU and GPU I can update ?

    QX9300
GTX 285M SLI or GTX 480M SLI or only buy more GTX 260M for SLI ?

You can update the CPU to the QX9300. Thats fine.

As for the GPU upgrades your choices are either to get a 2nd 260 or get 2X GTX 280m SLi or the ATi Dual Crossfire 4870s.
The Dual 4870s are the most powerful GPUs for the R1 i think. Comparing them with the 280m SLi they would be about the same in certain instances however the 4870s would be slighly more powerful in most cases.

The GTX 285 SLi should be possible as well but I think you had do some slight modding or something. The above GPUs will definitely work however.

    Cheers.

If you get 4870's or even the 285M you will loose the hybrid option I think, not a big deal if you don't use the integrated gfx.

LOL mate nice 2c u here

If u want an upgrade just get a QX9300 ES and another GTX 260M (with the specific heatsink). Remember that u also need a SLI cable, as AW wont put it in a single GPU M17x.

IMO just try to sell it for as much as u can and buy a R2 lol

Hello people! This is an interesting topic :^)
I have M17X R1 with two GTX 260M which I already sold. And now I think what to buy next? Is my fate is GTX 285M in SLI as maximum possibility choice? Or I can be happy owner of 460M? Please tell me can I use GTX 460/470/480M in my M17X R1. Maybe if not the BIOS modding or updating can solve this issue? Sorry for poor English and thank you for answers!

@CMaxx22 - I think someone is trying to get a GTX 4xx card working in a m17x atm but think its an R2. Id link ya to it but i forget where i saw it sorry, but it was in this forum somewhere. Been trawling thru a fair bit lately lol.
@deathscythevn -Dont forget to check if you have the 240w PSU before you go forking out for any second card. If you dont have the 240w PSU, you'll have to add that to ya bill to go for any dual card setup.

I have 4870's and sometimes miss hybrid - which is the ability to switch between discrete (cards) and integrated (motherboard) graphics on the fly. Keep in mind that you can still switch between the two via the BIOS. It's a little more work, but I find that if I'm switching to integrated, I'm also going to want to de-overclock my CPU anyways for power saving.

Going from a 260 to a 280 or 4870 will be a large improvement. Though I second what others said earlier - if you can sell it and buy an R2, go for it. Of course, you'll lose the integrated graphics, so be sure to consider that, too!
