Hi I have purchased a 3d display assy to upgrade my M17x R4 and I have a nvidia geforce gtx 660m graphics card installed. Not sure if this card is compatible with 3D Vision in that case I will purchase a 680m if it is not.I have already tried a 770m and that lead to the same problem but anyhow I have installed the latest driver package from nvidia for this card and there is no stereoscopic option in the nvidia control panel for the wizard. Does anybody have any ideas on this problem?

Hi, It could be the 3D certification' in the BIOS? I would expect any NV card to support 3D but maybe dell have it set to only work with a couple of GPU's? I know that if you fit a GPU that is not on the list of GPU's sold with the machine (like a 7xx) this is what happens. You give up 3D for the faster card.
The 680m is the stock 3D model for the R4 (my 675 also) so it should work but check the USB devices in device manager to see if the NV controller is there.

Probably just a case of getting the right card though. I had this happen a couple of times a while ago, I noticed that during the driver install, when it gets to the 3D components there is a brief file copy window that opens. If this does not happen stereoscopic is missing altogether from the driver CP. -

I have the 17xR4 and I can confirm that when you put a 770m into the laptop you lose the 3D vision for the laptop monitor. I think it has something to do with the drivers, specifically what has been mentioned already regarding device IDs. Only certain cards work for 3D. I can use the HDMI port to play games in 3D on my TV, so you can still use a 3D TV and possible a 3D monitor if you use HDMI.
Upgade M17XR4 to 3D vision
