Hello everyone, first sorry by advance if my language is not perfect because I'm french.

I search since few days for find the good way for install GTX 880m 8go on Alienware M17X R4 with 120hz 3d screen.

I want change my current graphic card (660m)

    My procedure :

I flash my current bios with the latest Bios on the Dell website (A12)
    I uninstall the Nvidia Driver
I open the laptop and replace the graphic card 660m by the 880m
Boot on the laptop, all is ok.
Next, I install the last nvidia driver (337.5 beta) and I modify the inf file.
Driver installation is ok and now the current control panel indicated that graphic card is 880m (3d screen options have disappeared), Nvidia inspector also indicated that it is the 880m installed.

The problem is, when I start a game for example, the performance are not changed (seem be the same fps than my 660m) I don't know why ?

    windows performance index indicated 7.2 , my 660m had 7.3 ?!

    I tried ;

    - Uninstall driver and install again
    - Checked Nvidia Control Panel for "High Perf. Nvidia Processor "

    Problem is always the same.

Do you know what is the problem ?

    Thank by advance.

Maybe there is not enaugh watt to push the max performance of the GPU. When i use a 180W for my laptop, my gtx780m was a bit like my gtx765m, 240W ( original for gtx780m and above) resolve this little problem :)

Agreed. You need a larger PSU.

Hello, I forget to indicated, I already use an other power supply from dell:

    Model Flextronics GA240PE1 263Wh

It is possible that bios limit the power ? I don't seen people who had install 880m in R4 yet and I don't know if I need to unlock the bios, and anyway, I don't find the unlock bios for 880m.

When I launch a game, in nvidia inspector , the frequency of the GPU still very low (147mhz), when I stop the game, frequency up to 954Mhz, it's strange....

Have you tried going through a reliable benchmark like 3DMARK ? Windows User Experience is not a reliable benchmark.

780m is the highest I've seen working properly on the R4.

It might be a driver issue, I see your card is recognized as a generic vga device by 3D Mark.

Keep in mind that for 3D models, the card needs to be whitelisted in the bios or at the very least you lose 3D capabilities. As far as I know the most performing recognized card on the R4 is DELL's version of the GTX-680M.

The 780m seem work good on R4, 880m is the same card, just frequency and ram quantity are changed.
People who use 780m in R4, do you have generic vga device in 3D mark ?
Do you unlocked and changed the bios ?

Mine shows as gtx 780m, but when I first installed the card, it did show up as generic vga device in gpuz. Once I installed the drivers and modded inf, my card showed up correctly. Before installing the drivers I also disabled driver signing and re-enabled after installation. I am also using unlocked a11 bios along with a custom vbios for my gtx 780m. This is with windows 8.1 btw.

thk for your information, can you tell me your 3dmark score just for know the difference ?

Also, do you know where I can find a custom vbios (if there exist for 880m) ? I search but I not find for the moment. I'm not sure but I think that problem can be my current bios.

edit : thk for the link

    Don't flash the 780m 4GB vBIOS, 880m 8GB.

There is not currently no. Not for design reasons either. It's being held to prove a point.

I resolved the problem, currently, the lastest driver is not really compatible with 880m, if I use old driver version like 327.23 ,it's much better.

But other problem is come, when I want to test with a benchmark or a game, the screen freeze or make green or white screen after 5 mn.

I tried differente thing, I lowered the frequency GPU and memory in nvidia inspector, I disconnected the battery and lower the screen light and desactivate the alien FX light, the problem not seem come from the power supply (263W) and the PSU is not hot.

So, I also tried to open a benchmark and game in a windows and not in full screen, it's always the same, after 5mn the driver crash.

I captured picture just before crash and after.

This crash appear only when I stress the Graphic card with benchmark or with a game.

It is possible problem come from the driver ? maybe I must test with other driver for check is the problem is always here.

    Sans-titre-1.jpg Sans-titre-2.jpg

in most cases, the screen freeze and I must restart the laptop, here I was able to take screen after nvidia driver was reload.

People who use 780m or other graphic card, if you have any idea about this problem :)
