I bought an m14x a couple of weeks ago. My first alienware and I love it. However, i was thinking i would really like to have a bigger laptop. Just so happens that one went up for sale on a local site a couple of days ago and i went and bought it today. The m14x has a better cpu which i will be swapping out into the m17x and also has a ssd that the 17 does not. I would like to swap this over as well but was warned that this could possibly cause BSOD if not done correctly. Is there anyone out there that could walk me through what i need to do to make this work with no complications. The actual labor of swapping it im fine with but the technical aspect is what im unsure about. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Howdy newbie. One thing that helps us diagnose and advise is for you to post your specs.

The technical aspect you refer to probably has to do with clean installing Windows onto your SSD once you get it into the M17x. I am not sure if this will apply for transplanting an SSD from an M14x to M17x. At the very least, you will need to remove the drivers specific to your M14x, then install the drivers specific to your M17x once you install the SSD in it.

You don't want to put a HDD or SDD where windows has been installed in an m14x, in an m17x.
The m17x has a lot of different hardware and chipsets. It's likely when you plug it in it will simply just seem to work, maybe install some extra drivers and then think all is OK. But it can caus all kinds of weird problems in the OS, shutdowns, blue screens, or games not running as they should, and you will never be able to pinpoint that back to chipset issues.

So in a nutshell, placing the SSD from the m14x to the m17x is absolutely no problem, but reinstall the OS on the M17x is my advice.

Best choice of your life. Once you get the M17x you will die from happiness :D imo at least

But yeah as said you definitely want a fresh install of Windows

Yeah, once you have installed the parts start off with a Clean Windows 7 installation.

When you get to step 4.6 make sure you select and delete all existing partitions until you have just unallocated space, then create a new partition and install Windows 7 on it.

After the OS has been installed you'll need to download and install the drivers for your M17x.

I can provide you a list with all the drivers and download links for your model, but I need the specs of the laptop to verify the model first.
