Hi guys, I just upgraded to a 920xm and right now the CPU is really hot.
I used Arctic mx-4 and appied a thin layer onto the cpu and screwed the heatsink back in. My old i5 had a orange-tint film on the cpu and my dad said it's best to transfer that over so I did, will that affect anything? I'm afraid if the cpu is in the 90C degrees range that film will melt!
Anyways, on idle all 4 cores are at 47 degrees which is fine, but on load things get crazy.
With 24/23/17/17 and 5% OC, prime95 running for 2 minutes, the core temps are 88/82/90/80!! That makes me nervous because it's essentially stock settings and already it's so hot.
Then 24/24/24/24 the temps according to throttlestop is 93/86/94/82. I've never seen such high temps in any laptop before. The TDP/TDA setting is 90/75.
Are these temps normal? I really don't want to disassemble the laptop all over just to resit the heatsink because I am fairly sure it's seated properly. Any advice is appreciated.
p.s which program is the most accurate? Temps observed from highest to lowest is: hwinfo64 --> throttlestop --> core temp. Which one is the correct one? Thanks

Wait, you have a metal sheet between the CPU and the heatsink ?
Did you put thermal paste on both sides of the sheet ? -
Get rid of the sheet.
Just use a rice grain size or less dab of thermal paste on the CPU, the heatsink should be clean.

It's there to help prevent thermal compound getting onto the surrounding cpu components. Your dad it right, it should be fitted.
The heat sink on the R2 dosent like to be bolted down too hard. The four screws are sprung loaded and you don't need to screw them all the way home.
On some units (yours) when some of the screws are tight down the level is actually a little low. This causes the heatsink to rock on the edge of the die and pull the other side up, actually reducing pressure. This gives the uneven and very high temperature you see.
To get the lowest temps, re-paste (sorry), then only screw the screws down around half way. Assemble the machine but with the keyboard up.
Load the CPU with an application like prime95 and adjust the four screws whilst watching the temperaures with an application like RealTemp. Make very slow adjustments and watch how the temperatures react.
This is how to get the very lowest temperatures, as you will be able to get the heat sink mated perfectly.

Edit: to add, Make sure the i5 Kapton sheet has the correct size hole for the i7 die. I've not seen the i5 -

The spring-loaded screw is on pretty tight so I guess I will have to re-paste and test it out. What are the loaded temperatures suppose to be when all 4 cores are running 3.33ghz (140 x 24) in prime95? I just need a reference and aim for that, thanks. -

with 27/26/24/24 my cpu tops at 77*C in TS bench after 44%.
but it will never go more than 80 after test finishes.

Omg, then I really need to re-paste asap... I thought 920xm runs hot (like mid-to-high 80s) but didn't expect mine to be that much hotter than normal...
flingin can you report your prime95 temps because I am in low 80s too when I run TS bench 32m. However I have no doubt that if I run 24/24/24/24 in prime95 it will hit 100 after 10 minutes...
I have 3 different pastes: mx-4 is brand new, arctic silver 5 and noctua nt-h1. From reviews mx-4 should be best but if you guys think otherwise please let me know -
Yeah, so prime 95 is really putting cpus under more pressure than TS bench.
after about 10 minutes my cpu peaked at 88'C and shortly before that fan kicked in and temp stabilized on 86*C and stays like that (from 84-86*C)
No throttling observed 90/75.
For me more than 90*C is i think impossible with fid at 24
