When I try to display out on the TV I get a blank screen.

Same thing with HDMI In. All I get is a black screen when I plug in the cable.

I've tried updating drivers and switching cables

OP, Completely uninstall all the GPU drivers and try again, make sure you install the dell GPU drivers first then install all others after. It should be plug and play "literally" I also updated from Windows 7 to Windows 8.

I just went to device manager and uninstalled the Nvidia driver. Restarted and uninstalled the Nvidia application from control panel. Downloaded the dell driver and installed that with the clean install option. Still no luck. Blank screen when I put the HDMI cable in.

    Any other suggestions?

I have issue with hdmi out not having sound. HDMI out is controlled by the integrated gpu, you installed the alienware drivers for that?

How did it go? Did the Intel driver fix it?

Sometimes when I connect it the resolution changes (like it's zoomed in) or nothing shows up on the external screen. I've gone around it by turning off/on the TV with the HDMI still plugged in, switching between secondary screen modes(extended, secondary only, etc..) or by restarting the computer.
