Hello all. I've been looking to upgrade my m17x to increase my FPS in games like WoW, and CoD. However, I have discovered (thanks to an especially insightful thread on this site) the true cost and hassle of upgrading the video cards of this notebook.
That being said, My m17x is barebones with the exception of the 1920x1080 screen and bluray player. As such it has a single GeForce GRX 280m and 4GB of RAM.
I was looking at upgrading my 4GB to 8 via 2
    Newegg.com - CORSAIR XMS 4GB 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 Desktop Memory Model CMX4GX3M1A1600C9

But I'm not so sure if it will actually raise my frame rates without a better graphics card.
    Any advice?

You will not see any increase in FPS going from 4 to 8gb. The only things that will increase your FPS is either a 2nd or a better video card, or a better CPU (although this would be very minor increase and totally depend on if the game is CPU bound).

Your best upgrade to increase your fps would be getting a secondary 280m.
After that, you can get a better CPU.

Correct me if i'm wrong, I read that you could only order them from Dell as they had to have the fang etc with them and they ran around $500.

GPU, you need to buy from dell. There are some lying around on ebay and NBR market sometimes. It's below $500 but it won't be cheap.
for CPU, you can buy from anywhere you want.

RAM won't give you any extra fps. I just went from a 4GB kit to an 8GB kit, and there was no difference in performance. A 920XM CPU from eBay is $450, and a 280M is around $500. No matter what option you go with, you're in to spend some dough. Installing a graphics card is not as labor-intensive as installing a CPU, and you will get more performance from it too. All you have to do is pull the hinge cover and the keyboard. You have to make sure that you get...

    1. The GPU itself.
    2. An SLI cable to link the two cards.
    3. The fan that cools the beast.

Make sure to run a benchmark before you install it and after. Let us know if you need any other help. Good luck man!

Thanks all, I apologize for my lack of experience with notebooks, i'm use to desktops.

Thanks, I think i'll save my money and wait until I can purchase/build a desktop again.
