I'm thinking of upgrade my DDR3 ram from 4gig to 8 gig in my M17X.

    my question is:
The ram that existing in the laptop now is DDR3 1066Mhz. (2x2gig)
The Ram I want to purchase is DDR3 1333Mhz (2X4gig)
Is my motherboard capable of utilizing this faster speed ram?
Or, will it auto select down to the correct speed?
Or, should I just purchase 2x4gig at 1066Mhz?

    here is my system:
    - Intel® Core™ i7 920XM 2.0GHz (3.2GHz Turbo Mode, 8MB Cache)
    - Genuine Windows® 7 Ultimate, 64bit, English
    - Dual 1GB ATI Radeon™ Mobility HD 4870 in CrossfireX™
    - 17-inch WideUXGA 1920 x 1200 RGB LED (1200p)
    - 4GB Dual Channel DDR3 at 1066MHz
    - 1TB Raid 0 (2x 500GB 7,200RPM HDDs)
    - Slot-Loading Dual Layer Blu-ray Reader (BR-ROM, DVD+-RW, CD-RW)
    - Wireless 1520 802.11n Half Mini-Card

Yea, your computer will utilize the faster speed. Actually if you ordered the system with a 920XM, it should have come with 4GB of 1333MHz RAM I think. Could be mistaken on that, but it will run at the faster 1333MHz. That said, unless you actually need 8GB I would save the money towards an SSD. I fyou need 8GB you will know. If you don't know you probably don't need it. Lots of RAM won't improve performance. It will only allow you to do RAM intensive things like heavy multitasking, things like CAD, and photoshop of large files ect.

The real question is why do you need more than 4GB of memory?

To be able to use more then one program that use memory. Yes 32 bit programs are stuck useing a few gigs. But when you use More programs. Like Games and downloading and Such at the same time More memory help.

If you are the like Some people who use it for Email, pictures and webbrowsing 2gb of ram is Fine.

Just think of what you are doing. Like When I play Civ 5. Very good game. I tend to top around 4.8gb to 5.8gb of ram. It not all about the Game There other Programs running.

I'm a big ram buff LOL. If I had the chance to go 16gb I would oles! ;) :D :D

    Cheers. :)

I'm constantly running at 1.45GB RAM 24/7 with lossless music playing, Firefox tons of tabs, YouTube playing and few other small programs. Without gaming.

Then if I game I never hit the limit and never get a low mem message (and I mean kinda most demanding games)

Guess I'm a small ram buff LOL. If I had a chance to go 16gb I would use that $$$ to buy a second SSD! ;) :D :D

    Cheers. :)
