Upgrading my R2 with new GPU

What are my options to upgrade the gpu on my M17xR2 right now?
I'm looking at this:
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 880M 8GB DDR5 for Clevo Alienware Upgrademonkey | eBay

I want to buy it but afraid it might not work, besides the 7970m is there any other gpu to look at that might perform even better?

BTW keep in mind i will be running a 940xm(qs) cpu.

I'm also looking to upgrade the screen in the future to 1200p.

Will the power supply be able to handle it all or I should get a modded 330watt psu? Mine is already buzzing with noises....

I don't want to buy a new laptop, my R2 is serving me very well so far.

 

It is hard to say if 880M will work.

We know for sure that 780M is NOT.

Price wise, 880M is Terribly expensive. You can get CF7970m for the price of single 880M, and yet you don't know if 880M will work. And 7970M CF will still be much more faster, if you really need that OOMPH

My advice is, if you do not want to waste a lot of money, get single 7970M and call it a day.

8970M and M290X is just a re-brand 7970m, and they are much more expensive - DO NOT buy those.

Only nVidia card worth looking at is 680M, but this one tends to be expensive as well.

Search for a new product, or TRUSTED NBR/Ebay seller.

GPU market is in a moment where manufacturers are just re-branding their products because they cannot jump onto lower nm process (current is 28nm).


Get 7970m. You will be happy.

 

As stated above, 780M does not work at all, I don't think 880M would be any better luck. 680M are still quite expensive used, 7970M might be your best bet.

 

I believe the same as Tsunade_Hime. The 7970m is the best option (please note that this is not a recommended upgrade and will not be supported by tech support). The 880m may get the same results as the 780m.
