Hi
i feel that my Alienware is slow, and has way to little space! I want to upgrade EVERYTHING in my Alienware M17xR3 to as good as possible. Now i also have two small 300gb hdd with RAID but i want a good ssd to my windows and some games, and a BIG hdd like 3tb.
can you help me to find out what I need to get the best upgrade possible? thanks

its cheaper to upgrade the graphics card than to buy a new computer :S and im going to upgrade the hard drives so why not the other stuff as well
but a ssd and bigger hdd is the most important! 580 gb is just not enough :S

my laptop is more than 5 years old, so i dont think i will get that much fror it, and a new laptop will be at least 2000$ :s but help me find my upgrades and i can look at price, and compare to a new laptop after i have all the prices

Hi, well the drive stuff is easy enough as long as you can re-install windows. Just one word of caution, many SSD's commend changing the BIOS setting to AICH from RAID. Do not do this, you will severely limit future upgrade potential (without re-installing windows!) and the potential for disk caching. Depending on the size of SSD you can quiet easily set aside part of the SSD to cache the HDD, speeding that up dramatically.

As for the GPU, which is going to give you the best performance hit you are somewhat limited with an R3. The 580m was top-of-the-line and any upgrade requires some work to use. The 580m is also a very unreliable card and there is a real risk that it is going to break if it is pushed. I see around one per week ATM failing.
The 680m is a rock solid replacement and a great performer - all current games pretty much maxed out. See this thread for details:

It fits just fine and you can reuse a 580m heatsink although I commend getting an original one for the R4 from Dell. This means you do not need to get involved with pads and paste since it comes ready to assemble.
If you do not have a 3D model then you do need to find an unlocked BIOS so that you can set the primary graphics to PEG and disable the intel. If you do not do this the machine will not switch to the NV as optimus is messed up by a non-standard GPU.
You also need a modified driver file that contains the machineID/GPU combination. NV only provide drivers that work with combinations sold by the OEM. Last post in that thread I linked has user j95 providing the files.
By using the Intel caching it creates a hidden partition on the SSD and stores all recent files there. The firmware intercepts calls to the HDD and looks in the cache. If it is there instant SSD access speed. If not it is copied (as a low priority thread) as it is loaded from the HDD. It's a rolling cache with more often used or recent files taking precedence. Just an idea of how good this works is that I worked with someone that added a cache drive to his HDD setup (R4) and instantly got sub 15 sec win loads!
The R4 has an extra disk port (MSATA) and dell use this to put in a separate SSD just for caching. You don't have this luxury but you can (See doc linked earlier) use part of the new SSD. Just remember to leave at least 32gb free space when formatting it during the new windows installation. Max cache size is 64gb.
