I want to buy a new M17X with the 3D bundle.
I'm hoping to buy the current model with a I7-3700 cpu and the 765M gpu.
Then wait until performance components are more affordable and upgrade then.

How easy is the upgrading on this laptop, I want to wait for the prices to come down on a 4.0 cpu and the 780(?)m gpu
Spend half now, and then maybe a couple hundred when the new stuff is last gen.. Or possibly get current gen hardware when it realeases.

It is always going to be cheaper going for the graphic upgrade straight away - the gpu aftermarket is very expensive even when the new gen stuff comes out!
The processor will be cheaper in the future however so you can go for the basic now and upgrade later, same goes for ram and hard drives they are cheaper aftermarket

Just to avoid any confusions, you mean core i7 4700QM right?

The AW17 is easy to upgrade, you can find disassembly guides in our support site and our youtube channel.

That is good news about the CPU, because the upgrade is a couple hundred $$$, but the GPU upgrade isn't cheap either at $600+..
Is it possible to upgrade the "NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 765M with 2GB GDDR5"
    --------------------------------to the "NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 780M with 4GB GDDR5"
With the nVidia 3d Vision Bundle, at the same cost or similar after purchase?

Sorry, I have been shopping these for a while waiting to take the plunge..
I want to buy the base model with a 3d upgrade.

So I want to go from the "4th Generation Intel® Core™ i7-4700MQ processor (6MB Cache, up to 3.4GHz)"
    --------------------------to the"4th Gen Intel® Core™ i7-4900MQ processor (Overclocked) (8MB Cache, up to 4.0GHz w/ Turbo Boost)"
Barring my interest in PC gaming.

I'm going from console back to PC and want to be able to take a 3d rig on the go with me.
Playing mostly Blizzard games, but wanna shift all my console games to PC (w/ 3d) and watch movies.
Apparently I missed out on all the HIFI wireless display options? When I was looking before Dell was pushing huge for the remote desktop cards (?) and some other wireless goods, but the customization has seemingly gone down on the newest models.
I can handle swapping out some stuff w/ guides, I have built numerous desktops. I just don't wanna jump in over $3,200+,
when something less then $2000 will due for my games, specially World of Warcraft, Diablo 2, Call of Duty, Gears of War ect

    Hi there :)

One thing to remember is that on all previous models Dell made them to only work in 3D with the cards they supply. I've not seen anyone with a new 17-3D try it out but there is no super-duper new NV card out yet.

So, by puting in something that comes out in the future you probably give up on 3D. The 120hz side works fine, and because the iGPU is hardwired out of the system you don't need to disable it (might need an unlocked bios) as others have found when fitting a non-standard GPU.

I got mine mainly for the 120hz but the 3D really blew me away. Forget the rubbish 3D you might have seen on TV's and consoles, this is way better and does add an extra dimension :)rolleyes :) to gaming :D.

    Good luck.

What about the 780M? It's shipping from dell and has a pretty high benchmark. I just don't wanna float the extra $600 to get it now, when I'm not sure that I want it. Is it possible to get silicone from dell, respectively making it built with OEM hardware, but upgraded from original.

If the 780m is sold by dell then it's fine. Basic rule is if dell sell the config then you can upgrade to it without a problem. They may release a BIOS update for older machines of the current model if they decide to sell a new model of GPU but usually they wait for a new model before going up a GPU generation :(

Dell will upgrade your GPU and add it to the warranty as the upgraded config but you have to get them to install (at least in the UK you do!) adding around $100 to the cost. I was told that they only allow user installation for HD's and memory...

    Good luck.
