    Hello guys,

I recently recieved my M17x-R2 and noticed that I accidentally selected the BASIC warranty coverage when I meant to select the ADVANCED warranty coverage (includes accidental stuff). Does anyone know if there is any way that I might be able to upgrade the package?

    Thanks

I think you can do that now. If not they will call when it is about to expire, so you can extend it...
But try calling them now and see what they tell you.

you can increase your warranty coverage at any time. The cost however is a lot more than it is when configuring the system at the time of purchase however.

Yeah, I just found this out. What a horrible mistake on my part, so frustrating that they won't allow me to upgrade for the initial difference. They are quoting me a price of $274.11 instead of the $30.00 difference.

I'm actually contemplating just returning the damned thing and going with a different vendor or re-ordering it again, which seems completely unnecessary and fixable.

I found this one out with my wife's laptop. Her first one failed 2 weeks inside warranty, and her replacement (a new unit) arrived just outside the end of warranty. The cost to buy a warranty extension was more than double what it would cost at the time of purchase.

There's absolutely no reason why it should be this way. There's no obvious reason why the warranty should cost more if you extend it after purchase. All I can assume is that they charge more because they can, and they'll take your arm + leg + first-born as payment.

Yeah it is rather unfair. I do feel like I have the upper hand right now since I'm within the 30-day return window. I'm sure I can avoid the restocking fee if I complain enough. But again, it all seems soooooo unnecessary.

Yes you should tell them you will return the system if you can't upgrade it at the initial purchase price especially since you CAN return it for real.

Rather than a sales rep, try to talk to a customer resolution rep, or I'm pretty sure you will end up talking to one when you request for return, and when they ask why you are returning it, I'm pretty sure they will try their best to make you keep the system by helping you get what you want.

Yup! They always treat us as if we don't know nothing. So let they know that we know our right.

Yesterday I called my sales rep to cancel my previous order and reorder the new one. The reason is Alienware is having better promotion than few days ago. The guy told me I cannot cancel it because it's already in production. I told him well I will just place another order and when the current one come I will just return it, simple as that. He then told me that let's see what he can do about it. After 30" he called me back, said the old order has been canceled and the new one has been placed. He did not even bother to ask for my billing info again lol.

most of the time when a situation like this happens it really is just not possible to purchase upgrades at the cost of the new computer, the discount options they have available and product codes just don't physically work.. I tried for a good week when 5870's came out and I had my 4870 R2 3 days prior to launch. If you want the warranty at the $30 price, I would not be surprised if you *have* to return and reorder.

Agreed on the return if you have to. You will not get a restocking fee if you are within the 21day US return period, or whatever time period you have in the country you reside. Still as Lozz said they have very interesting rules that they can't avoid when trying to key in what you want.
When I ordered my two AW's they could give me +20% discount on both but only if I got the i5 520 M11X and not the i7 M11X, plus I had to get the 8GB RAM whether I wanted it or not. Made no sense to me but that was the only way to key it all in and get the discount.
Promotional codes, shipping discounts, warranty upgrades all fall under specific rules that they have to follow. You may get very lucky but I believe that unless, as SillyHoney said, you are speaking with a customer resolution rep, you will have to return and reorder.
