Hi there, I found a buyer and negotiated a price to pick up a M17x R2 for $1100 CAD, I'm really looking for a R3 so I can hook up my ps3 to it and keep it for a long time but the deal I have now looks pretty tempting. The specs are:

    ATI 5870m Crossfire GPU
    Core i5 520m 2.4ghz turbo to 2.93ghz
    1920 x 1200 RGB LED display
    4 gigs DDR3 ram
    500 gig Hard Drive
    Ultimate-N wireless card
    Win 7 Ultimate 64 bit
    Microsoft Office Enterprise 2007
    Dvd dual layer burner

Is that a good deal? I haven't had time to look up the market value so I need advices quickly, much thanks!

You could pick up an m17x R3 for little more with Dell warranty on the Outlet. That is a little high its an i5 little pricy. ;)

IMO, that's a good price. But if you really want the R3, alienwolf is right, add a few hundreds more and you can get a decent one.

CAD = canada? I thought that was "cash at delivery".

Hmmmmm. Well it seems like an OK price to me...just not as thrilled about the i5 (although to be fair the i5s are pretty darn good processors).

That being said, the winning point being (at least if you can get to dell outlet somehow) that for not much more you can get one in warrenty.

Personally I would be really worried about buying a PC from someone other then at least an ebay "top seller" with at least 99% positive feedback. But thats me...I guess I am chicken.

great, deal. You can get a 920XM, for 500 dollars, and then you will have a very high end R2.

I think the R2 is better! The screen quality is much better than the R3.

Plus a decent R3 now runs up to 2200 USD after customization.

well I've pull the trigger and got it, I think it's a great deal as similar R2 are like $1500, and m17x with the RGB screen commands $1800 on kijiji.

I'll use the core i5 for now but I'm definitely on the lookout for a 920xm or 940xm on ebay =p. Really loving this screen, it is amazing for a laptop and the color is just like my 30" dell 3011wfp!!

Some guys got amazing R3 deals, like 580m/6990m with 1080p 3D screen for $1200-1300 but I've looked on Dell Outlet US and there's no inventory, so oh wells I'm glad with my purchase. Now to install some games on this beast!

The i5 is plenty for gaming, except of course some exceptions of badly coded games, i.e. GTA4, Civilisations5 etc. Even with those titles it should do good.

    Congrats

    You are thinking of COD.

    CAD = Canadian Dollar.

Update: I've been playing around the laptop and the screen auto-dims, the owner installed the RGB LED screen himself so that might explain why the screen does that, is there anyway to shut it off because it's quite annoying.

Secondly, the i5 520m was bottlenecking the dual 5870m, in games I noticed both cards are only 60% used so I spent some time learning how to overclock using Setfsb (also read about throttlestop by it didn't do anything noticeable). I think I've overclocked it successfully but just want to see if this OC seems realistic for my cpu.

At stock it is 2.4ghz, single thead can go to 2.93, dual is 2.66ghz

I've messed around and increased the BLK to 164 instead of 133, and it is stable. So at 164 x 22 multiplier it sometimes hit 3.6ghz according to cpuz and core temp. Is that right? Cuz I didn't think a i5 520m can go that high. Coer 1 hits 78 degrees/83 degrees in prime95 but I didn't leave it on for long.

SC2 runs a lot better now with the OC and there's no more slowdown so I'm very happy with the performance! :D

Try running on high power setting and set it to not dim in the settings might help. ;)
