UPDATE - here is where Im at now:

I ordered a laptop with basic warranty (m17x-r3) and been using it for a week or two. But when I checked the prices of extending the warranty they were just much higher than when purchasing, so somebody here suggested that I call dell and tell them to extend it for the basic price since im still in the 21 days return policy.
Well I called dell today and they said that its not possible.

IMPORTANT - I will be comming back to Czech Republic after a year in USA so I need the warranty to be international.

I asked the rep to call me back monday so I have some time to decide and would appreciate your insight!

This is what Im left with (according to him):

    1year extension: $275 + $50 discount + $50 gift card

    2year extension: $470 + $75 discount + $50 gift card

    3year extension: $660 + $75 discount + $50 gift card

    4year extension: $793 + $75 discount + $50 gift card

thats obviously for basic care :/ The only other option is to call somebody else (but I dont know who since he said that he spoke with his supervisor and got that $50 discount) or send it back, with him saying that it will cost me %15 restocking fee ($250) + the system Ill receive will be much more expensive since he said it was some sort of special offer and they cant match the price .

    I would appreciate any insides!

    Thank you!

Well you seemed to have saved me the trouble of calling myself. I was thinking of doing the same for my refurb.

If you really want to do this, I suggest maybe asking to speak with the sales manger. Seems like most level 1 techs and sales don't have much power to do anything. It really makes no sense to have to send it back and reorder it. Seems like a waste of time and resources for both you and Dell.

i was told that i could update my warranty before the one yr warranty ran out...this was from the Alienware reseller that i got my machine from.

Maybe yours is different because it was a refurb from the outlet

i know I can do that, but the price is $790 instead of $399 :( I mean I could get 4 years complete care for $539 and it would still cost me $251 less

How much did you spend on the laptop? You might want to weigh the cost of a warranty vs the cost you paid for the laptop w/ 1 year of coverage you have.

After reading these prices, I don't want a warranty anymore. I paid $1300 for my M17xR3 after taxes. If it breaks after a year, i'll cut my loses and buy something different.

You just may receive a letter from Dell in a few months with a large discount to up grade your warranty with them. I have received several in the past after about 3 or so months. Thats the time to act if you want. When you call right after getting the system they fell we got him. ;)

    You do have some options!

If you paid with your credit card, you can check into the extended warranty programs offered by many credit card companies. My Sony VISA card doubles my warranty on my products for up to one additional year for no additional cost (so if I am given a standard 1 year warranty, my second year will be through VISA).
    VISA Warranty Service

Also, Squaretrade is another option. I entered the information you provided into squaretrade.com , and I came up with a 3 year warranty for $199. They often release 20%-30% off coupon codes into the wild, making the cost of the warranty even cheaper.

If you are a new customer, here is a 20% off code to get you started. Just enter "INTRODUCTION" into the coupon code box.

Don't pay the insane amount that Dell is trying to charge you.

    Repped for great suggestions.

Also, dont forget about Amex, which does the same as the Visa.

Just for future reference you should always get the warranty upfront as it will be cheaper. That being said at this point I would wait till your closer to the end of your year and they will send out notifications trying to get you to purchase a extended warranty.

I did that with my M11xR2 and haggled with the sales rep for a 3 year extended for $300 + 75 Gift Card. Obviously YMMV on this but thats what I would do if I was in your shoes.

On the flip side while I never used their service, Squaretrade has been very highly recommend as a good alternative to manufacture warranties.

    Good Luck :)

yes it was, but it is a great price even for outlet considering i didnt use any coupon.

alright I forgot to mention that Im originaly from Czech Republic and I will be comming back from states after a year - so basicaly Im looking for warranty that I will be able to apply there which is not SquareTrade -Id have to send the laptop back :/ and its not as cheap either since is refurbed.

At the moment this seems like the best option, because they would provide me with an international warranty. But will it be better than that $75 discount + $50 gift card that they offer me now?
Also, where do I need to subscribe specificaly to get emails about warranty extensions deals? I know I signed up somewhere but I want to be sure to get those!

Thanks all of you guys for your insides.
