So for some reason the usb port on my m17x r2, the one on the right side closest to the back stopped working. I noticed when i plug my external harddrive in, it powers it on but won't read it. Nor will it recognize anything else i plug into it. The other usb ports work just fine. I've tried reinstalling the usb drivers, resetting the bios, but no luck. Not sure how this happened nor how to fix it. Any ideas?

This happened to my XPS 1645 and Dell replaced the motherboard...

Yup, about the only way to fix it is replace the motherboard. Anything happen recently out of the ordinary with USB devices? Or did this just happen all of a sudden?
