Hi I'm currently in the process of looking to purchase a used M17x R4. One I'm looking at has had a couple of upgrades and I want to know if they are suitable for this machine. The upgrades are

The processor has been upgraded to i7-3940xm
The graphics card has been upgraded to GTX680
Ram has been increase to 32GB DDR3

I have checked the service tag with dell and it's now out of warranty but on the spec sheet it still showing the original configuration. Should I be wary of this machine or am I responsibly safe?

The M17x R4 came with the 680M, and the 3940XM is a great CPU. The RAM is universal, so nothing to worry about on the specifications side. Although, if the warranty is completely expired, you can't extend it. So, you should definitely make sure everything is 100% functional before purchasing it. No exceptions.

I wouldn't purchase it unless the price was really nice.

The guy said that he has run it for 8 hours straight playing Crysis 3 with no issues. The price he is asking is about $1300. Is this a good price? My only concern is the lack of warranty and they guy only has a small feedback rating on eBay?

Yes, that's a good price. Maybe too good. Are there many images of the system?

You should be covered by eBay buyer protection, but it's a pain to deal with that if something is wrong.

He can say a lot of things, you won't know until you test it. As J.Dre says, it's a very good deal, so good that I'm concerned about it. :p

You can always call Dell and give them the service tag, sometimes you can negotiate to have a post warranty extension, I'm sure it'll cost an arm and a leg. PayPal gives you 45 days from purchase to dispute, and almost always sides with buyer.
