I usually like to play games while watch TV. So I usually play with the laptop on my lap and use the touchpad.

Is this possible with the M17x? Does it get too hot on the bottom?

I've only done this once. It doesn't kill you, but don't wear shorts.

i put a thin plywood between the laptop and the lap (so i don't block the vents) and it's no problem at all (just a bit heavy)

Mine's on my lap right now on an XBrand notebook cooler. If you're not getting burned and the laptop can breathe, you're fine.

I use this one - sorry for a danish link :). My m17x is always standing on it. I do not own a desk atm., so I'm using my M17x with a keyboard, mouse and my TV :)

I love this cooler for use purely on a lap because it is super easy to place in any position, has a lip to keep the base of the laptop from sliding around, and the whole bottom and sides are mesh so the fans can still breathe no matter how you have it setting on your lap.

bad idea to boot... the M17x gets its fresh air from the bottom of the laptop. If it is on your lap, it is not getting air flow threw the heat sinks... If you are gaming, it WILL overheat. not only that, but putting a laptop on your lap fills it with its enemy "dust" from your garments.

The M17x is a great gaming laptop, get a lap pad for it if you want to game on your lap, and never put a laptop directly on your lap.

P.S. the best cooler for the M17x is by far the Cooler Master U3. Because this is a 17" laptop, it can be hard to find a cooler with fans in the right place, the U3 lets you put them where you want them =^_^= I got mine here:

get a Cooler that is comfortable on your Lap, even if you dont use the cooler, at least it would be off your lap and not blocking the Vents. For me i could never game sitting on the couch watching TV, haha, maybe WOW but never any kind of FPS, i give you credit for being able to game in that position.

I'm using a Logitech N700 lapdesk/cooler/speakers now. It makes it much more comfortable. I wish there were a huge version of it so I could mouse on it.

I use it on my lap all the time. I'm pretty thin so I can position my knees between the gpu and cpu vents so not much airflow is blocked.

What kind of temps are you running idle, and gaming? I too am "thin" and can place my legs between the GPUs and CPU, but still dont get as much cooling as on a table, or my cooler. Also, watch out for the dust and particles coming off your garments and in to the machine.

I use an N700 as well.

It has a padded bottom and a built in fan (which arguably may not reduce the temeratures all that much on the m17x)

Also surprisingly, I find the sound better on the N700 speakers than the m17x speakers.

Highly recommended for extended periods of time where the m17x will be on your lap in bed / on the couch.

I have no idea what who makes the "seat" I use with my laptop but its designed for 17 models and use it on my laptop. As for gaming with the touch pad forget about its easily one of the worst touch pads conceived in modern history

I've have been using the touchpad to game on my past 3 laptops. Unless the touchpad is physically incapable... I will prolly use it.

    Great. . . crotch-BBQ.

Nah, it's fine, so long as the vents aren't blocked.

Well, in all seriousness, I have also used the touchpad. On the M1730, the touchpad was perfect. However, with the M17x R1, something with the feel and actual texture of the touchpad causes the bloody thing to have jittered movements. It's actually not practical for gaming no matter how good you are with the idea since your physical movements on the touchpad will translate jittered-up on the screen. Very annoying.

No, I have a R2 and unless you plan on playing something like poker, a card game, or a VERY slow moving RTS (think turn based) your going to need another solution. I have gamed before on laptops using touch pad including playing FPS. But its simply a nightmare on the M17 R1 or R2. I think the M11 is the only that got a usable touch pad.

What others have mentioned. I do like that it's not as sensitive though. Obviously you can change this in AlienSense but I love that fact that it doesn't trigger when I'm typing, which happens all the time in my other laptops. With my R2, I actually use the toughpad from time to time...pigs are definitely flying! :)

If you don't want to use the touch pad but want it on your lap so don't have room for a mouse do what I do. Buy a trackball (I use a Logitech Trackman) and set it on the palmrests of the laptop. It doesn't really get in the way of typing tho if I was going to type a 5 page Office doc I'd probably move it.

I use it on my lap most of the time with a wireless mouse. Biggest complaint is that it gets heavy.

The touchpad, is slow, unresponsive, jerky, unpredictable ( as in sometimes it detects movement, and sometimes it doesn't) and even with the responsenivness jacked in the aliensense its slow. The only I don't use a wireless mouse is when I'm using a 360 controller and just need to open GTA or what have you.

Yeah, man. That touchpad is just frigin' retarded. I mean, was this a consequence of the designers just wanting to make it look all. . . cool? Brutal, man. Brutal.

    A combition of two factors.

    - There IS something wrong with the driver, because when I use the stock Windows 7 drivers IN Windows 7, the movement is much smoother. Unfortunately, it's still far from perfect because there is more to this and that takes us to the seond point.

    - Possibly--I think--the physical design of the pad as it has those 'teh kewlz' bumps to make it look all hardcore and flashy, which as I see it, probably does create some microcosmic impedance on the movements as the bumps are essentially inconsistencies across the pad. I don't know for sure, but common-sence would dictate that a touch pad's supposed to be smooth, damn it.
