so i'm lookin into SSD's for when i get back, since i'll have my nice tax bonus from bein in the sand (still havent recieved my M17X yet :( ) and i was lookin into SSD's.

i love the rates from the Vertex3, but it seems the vertex2's are almost as good (well, in sata2 they're about the same, but obviously vertex3 has sata3 which is where it shines)

just wondering if anyone out there has either of these in there M17X. i think i remember reading somewhere about some problems with the vertex2's and raid? not that it matters, i'll be getting a 120gb single drive for OS/gameplay, and use the 320 as a backup/storage drive, and probably an external 1TB for anything extra/redundancy/option for recovery.

also, sort of Off topic, but i'm thinkin about repasting the CPU, and possibly lapping it. i originally had an old q6600 before my last upgrade, and i lapped that thing as a last sort of step before i upgraded, and it provided some awesome results. just wondering if anyone has any thoughts on that? some people might not view it as worth it, but for me, i've had too many problems in the past with heat, and anything i can do to beat it is a +1 for me, even more so since i cant go water cooling on a laptop.

Check out the intel 320 or samsung 240 series instead, reason very high failure rates for vertex 2(most SF drives actually). And since your laptop does not have SATA 3 it would be a waste if money to get a SATA 3 drive.

m17x r3 does support sata III. Just try port 1 instead of port 0 (I think), people have been having problems with port 0 not always being sata III.

Also, vertex 2 does have very high failure rates. Vertex 3 is a bit better. I might also recommend the Intel 510, or the Crucial m4, which I think is the best option atm

Sorry i confused your post with another one I was checking out(he had an R1) and hence the comment about no support for SATA 3. The R3 does support SATA 3 and I will recommend the Intel 510 and Crucial M4 too. They are the best SSDs out there right now. Even though the Vertex 3 has higher benchmarks, real world performance is the same as 510 and M4.

i havent heard of any Vertex 3 failures. i know about the Vertex2 failures now. i had thought it was the same thing you pointed out about the ports, but it seems they're both seperate problems.

i didnt even notice the crucial before, the price difference is right about spot on too, so i might go that route. a 128GB should do nicely. i wonder how much of a real world difference there is between the vertex3 and the M4 there are? i'd go with the intel, but prices are about the same, if not more than the Vertex3, and i figure if i'm gunna scale back i might as well go with the more affordable option.

edit: well i guess you just answered my question before i even posted. realworld performance = negligible huh? M4 it is then i guess lol.

    Crucial m4 256GB SSD (C400) Review - Install Times
Keep going to the next page, they have a couple of real world performance tests and as you can see there is hardly any difference.
And yes Vertex 3s have not been as bad as Vertex 2 till now but most of the Vertex 2s started failing a couple of months into use, and since the Vertex 3 has not been around for long we cannot judge reliability, but looking at the track record of SF based drives i would stay away from it.

yea true. but of course by the time i actually get my M17Xr3, and get back to the states, they will have another month of reliability under their belt lol. the price of the crucial is probably a better factor for me though.
