What is the best Nvidia video card that I can upgrade my M17x R2 with? I am currently running two GTX285Ms in SLI configuration. Can I upgarde them to the 500 series or do I need a new motherboard for that? Thanks!

No. Just need the two cards. Everything you're using with the SLI 285's (Heatsink/Fan and SLI Cable) should work if you get two 580M's.

You'll need a few spare organs and a small fortune however...

I don't think SLI 580M is working in the R2 yet. If you must have Nvidia, then you might just go with a single 580M, which is incredibly powerful even for a single card. If you're willing to go with ATi, then you can go with two 6970s for around $850. You can use your current heat sinks and CrossFire cable.
