    Hey guys,

My independent video(N Geforce GTX 880M) card doesn't work properly, I checked device managers it says: windows has stopped this device, because it has reported problems(code 43 )

I tried to update the newest driver, bios, and even reinstall new system, however, my video card still fails to run.

Does anyone have this problem before? Could you please tell me how to fix it?

    cheers.

    Hi there,

This can be a tricky one. The windows error code 43 is a generic card failure with no indication of just what caused it.

I have seen a bunch of desktop users with this and it was some problem with the NV driver and windows Virtual Machine hardware interface. Do you use a VM to connect to a remote windows session?

The fix (without messing with the bios) is to strip out the nvidia driver completely. Use DDU ( Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU) 13.2.0.0) to strip out all the nvidia stuff. When it restarts the video card will probably show up as 'VGA Compatible'. Not a problem, install the nvidia driver from the dell site.

If it works then you can try later drivers, just not the latest. You now know how to fix it if it happens again .

If it does not work then there is a possibility the card has actually failed. So once you have dell's approved driver installed it is time to call in AW support. I'm sure they have a rack of 880m problems . Be prepared for a factory reset though. AW support DO try other things before recommending this but if a card failure is suspected but not proven then this is their only option to remove installed software as a cause :(.

Unfortunately that card has got such a bad rep for overheating and throttling that sales have dropped through the floor!

If you have success please post what fixed it - so I can let others know ;).

    Good luck.

That does sound like it's a card failure i'm afraid :(.

What country are you in? In most you will get an engineer at your home (or anywhere else you want) with a replacement card.

If this happens then you will need to test the replacement as I have seen one guy that has had a replacement that overheated as well....

Hey , it doesn't work :( still.... :( too bad.

I am in Australia but I bought this laptop from United States. Prices of AW are ridiculously high in Australia.

Guess it has died. As long as the seller transferred the warranty to you you or registered it to you should have no probs with AW support. I've heard good reports from AU users about getting replacements :).

Let me know how the call goes, if you don't live in a major city they may want it returned to a depot but try to argue on on-site as the repair depots are a bit hit and miss around the world.

    Good luck.

    Sigh.... '
    I'll call them tmr morning.

Thanks for your help anyway. I am just so curious, the video card can be detected when I run Bios, but fails to run when I get into the windows.

That's why you look for driver or other software initially. You could try a card reseat if you're up for it?

Remove the lower cover, should be two screws. Identify the video card and remove the fan (three screws). Then undo the two retaining screws paralell to the card slot. NOT the four card to heatsink screws!
You can now lift and pull the whole assembly out. Clean the edge connector with alcohol and refit.

Edit: Forgot to add full instructions are in the on-line AW17 manual :D

That's too risky I reckon. Im not quite sure to do this weather the warranty will be voided. So I guess calling Dell is the best option I have.

Ahhh, will they send their technique geeks to fix my laptop even when ownership transfer is still processing?

Probably not, but you have much better consumer protections than most other countries so they may still work the case.

It will not void the warranty, they specifically state you can dismantle them and replace parts. They only refuse service if the problem is caused by you. I understand the reticence, it's scary taking a screwdriver to such an expensive piece of kit .

Update: Just saw a UK user that got dell on-site replacement of his card and the warranty transfer was still in progress, magic 8 ball says 'Prospects are good!'
