I am looking to purchase either of these cards for little money. Will also consider paying scrap price for dead ATi 5870M, 6870M, 6970M, 6990M, or 7970M.

Online prices are about the same for a 6970M or even a 7970M in some cases, which is entirely unreasonable for a card of this age/performance.

How much do you think is reasonable for 6970m?

The price changes due to availability. Since the 6970 is older, there are less cards available and some computers can only use that. Therefore, the price rises. Since the 7970 is more common, it is easier and cheaper to get.

Indeed... I would recommend the 7970M for that reason and also the fact that a 6970M costing a similar amount performances much worse..

Please skip 6970M, 6990M - they tend to fail over a pretty short period of time, so a used one would be more like a lottery, go for 7970M - much better reliabality and perfomance.
    Kepler based 670MX \ 675MX \ 680M should also be considered :)
