What is the difference between the pre RGB LED display the M17x's were using? Is the RGB considered a "better quality" display or are they about the same?
-
Same screen with different back lighting method. The previous one is dual CCFL. The RGB is more brighter and has stronger colors.
-
Difference chiefs is
("NIGHT and DAY")++
Night and DAY chiefs. LOL!
But yeh what Anodize said. The back lighting. The RGB LED is super bright and colours are very vibrant. I love how bright it is as I can use the notebook in any type of lighting; even in a room that is Super duper bright
On the older screens; The R1s and initial R2 release screens you can't see a thing but your own MUG if your sitting in a super duper bright room or next to a window where the sunshine shines brightly inward.
Cheers.

RGB means Red, Green, Blue, which make the color more real, not like the traditional white color.
-
BTW: RGB screen is awesome for the professional graphic design.
-
It is an awesome multimedia screen for sure, but for professional graphics? No way.
-
I know RGB will work in R1, but it is just so expensive $1000, I can get a nice Full HD bravia for $1000
-
I've read somewhere it can be had for $500 or so. Too lazy to search.
-
Really? i can find only one person selling those screens en eBay for $999.99 ... looked for it in google but all pages links are the same one from the guy on eBay.
-
You should call Dell and ask how much they want for the display.
-
thats crazy considering you could find an entire computer with an RGB LED screen on dell's outlet website for only ~$1100 after 20% coupon...
-
How do you see if you have WUXGA or RGB
-
R2 WUXGA = RGB.
-
At the moment i bought the laptop (April 2010), mi priorities were:
number 1) I wanted a M17x
number 2) I wanted NVIDIA cards, GTX 280M or GTX 260M
number 3) I wanted the RGB LED screen
number 4) I wanted the i7 processors , this was my last priority because I know there is no such a big difference between Core 2 Quad and i7 processors in games.
so, I found in M17x R1, number 1 and 2, and in R2 1, 3, and 4. The thing is i wanted SLI more than the other things. So i decided R1.
Now I regret because R2 is coming with GTX 285M SLI, the problem is I can't ask for a replacement because this is a refurbished laptop that I bought to someone on eBay, but it is still under warranty.

RGB blows anything else out of the water, but it isn't good at all for web design. IPS is best for design because of reference. Doing a design on an RGB screen is a terrible idea. You're seeing colors that a very small population of people will also see. A designer / developer wants his / her work to be viewed the way he or she saw it when he / she created it. Colors on the RGB monitors are much more vibrant and anything you make will almost look under-pronounced if you're trying to not make something that looks "too" pronounced.
-
So all R2's have RGB, correct.
-
For US/CAN/UK/AUS, yes, but not all. I believe Dell Japan only offers WLED(prolly the same screen used on the precision m6500).
-
Yep cheifs, all the current new and newly sold R2s have the RGB LED screens. When the R2s first came out about 5 to 6 months ago they didn't have the RGB LED screens. Soon after they did come out though.
Thats why there are still some in the outlet or refurb units that don't have the RGB or LED screens.
Cheers.
-
So how do i confirm what one i have...I brought a refurb/returned unit R2
-
You can use HWiNFO32. Look under the "monitor" tabs and it should show you all the info you need about your LCD monitor. Like manufacturing date and RGB and so forth.
Take a screen or snipping tool shot of it if you like and post back up here for us to confirm for you.
Cheers.
-
Most refurbs and Alienwares sold on eBay do not have the RGB screen which is how they "trick" people into thinking they are getting a better deal then they really are. They are the standard 1440x resolution non HD or whatever it is.
-
I have 1920x1200 res, i made apoint of steering clear of the 1400 res. Does this mean mine is RGB?
-
Most likely and if not its still just as good IMO as long as you don't have the lower res screen you should be happy either way.
-
Hey chiefs,
Download this
HWiNFO32 Download
or you can also use this;
http://www.astra32.com/files/astra32setup.exe
and hit the monitor tab to bring up the LCD info. Then snip tool us a pic and we can confirm which monitor you have. Whether its the LED RGB or the former.
Cheers.

-
Where did you sold it? eBay? or where?
-
Thats the same monitor name i have, and mine say RGB also, but it is CCFL.
-
Yeh that monitor is the CCFL version. It was one of the 1st monitor models that came out with the M17x R1 and early R2 models.

ok NP, mines sweet, so i better check an RGB out if mines good, they must be amazing
-
Yeh the LED RGBs are amazing cheifs. I have both and its like looking at night and day between the 2 screens lol. The LED RGBs are super bright and vibrant.
Cheers.
-
But where can we get them
-
Dell? Why would you look else where?
-
1) does dell sell parts? - sorry for my ignorance
2) My guess is that Dell will always be the most expensive place to buy a spare -
Yes, they do. Call and ask for the price.
-
Ok I just got a response from Dell Latin America, via email:
I will translate this for you:
I was just asking to them to sell me the RGB LED screen and a keyboar es-CL because i need my ñ. This is exactly why Dell is not good outside USA, everytime i read you guys in USA can ask for replacement almost any time, or you can actually get your parts from dell if you want to make an upgrade, and a lot more stuff, I think, wow, Dell is really great, but the i remember that Dell LA dont care about their costumers.. and then I got angry
-
Did I understand that right? All US R2's have the RGB screen regardless of resolution?
Is this true of the Outlet laptops?
Mike -
There are some old R2's with the CCFL, but the majority are with the RGB.
Keep in mind the RGB is only in WUXGA(1920 x 1200) resolution. -
If you check it usually is RGB however the main difference is the backlighting. Its either CCFL or LED back-lit. Run the programs I posted further back on this thread and post up a pic if you like and we can have a gander for you.
I've never seen the codes for screens that weren't 1920 X 1200p. Wonder if their the same or different? Hmmm..
Cheers.
-
I find it easier to just increase and decrease the brightness using the keyboard If it's rgb when u decrease the brightness there will be a weird transition of Colours, like it goes slight yellowish and then becomes alright (if done rapidly from full to low). It doesn't happen with ccfl.
-
s.o. here posted that it costs about 1k...
-
I've been getting different quotes all the time, and I know in asia, they sell it for no more than $500. Every rep tells something different. So it's best to actually ask directly. Hope you can understand that.
