Hi, i'm new in this forum![]()
I wanted to ask about how to get a new alienware m17x, i'd prefer a configuration with a reasonable price, i mean not the cheapest one nor the most expensive maybe something with the best processor and a great graphic card available.
Also i want to ask if it's better to spend less on RAM, if i can upgrade it by myself later.
And how can i manage the upgrades if it's possible.
Another doubt is about the 3d funtcion, is it worth by now or does it reduce its performance, please tell give me some details and advices about this.
Also what is the difference between R2 an R3.
And some other recomendations for non us customers, like tips or some advices. I've been looking for a nice offer on internet but i don't find dealers whom i can trust completely. I'm from Perú i i'm willing to get a nice desktop replacement cause i need some portability and a great graphic processing, so i need a powerful laptop![]()
Hope someone can help me with this issues soon ty very much
Xtopher
Edit:
Also i want to know if it's possible to install other SO in this laptop and i'd prefer to get this alienware with personalizations available like in the us site.

Also some tips to avoid some problems when buying or when using the new equipment

My personal suggestions :
The 2760qm is a good choice, good balance, get the lowest ram and upgrade yourself to save a lot money, everything else your preference. The 3d screen is brighter and is 120hz, I noticed that on wow with during raids, it's quite smooth, no big difference on fps.
I wanted to get the r2 for the solid build as its more metal and a great screen, but decided to go with the r3 for lesser weight, and more future proof.
There are no right answers, pick what fits your gaming needs!
If I just play wow, I would have opt for a r2 with the great display, an xm cpu. -
The lappy in my sig cost 2400 back 4 months ago, now it should be cheaper, and people get a hell of a deal working with the rep on the phone, I am ridiculously happy with this baby, it is the best laptop I ever had (well, best computer), I think one 580m is more than enough, but I am greedy to consider m18x-r2 for future
if some machine puts sli in < 10pounds I am buying it

The best upgrade to me is going to SSD, it just makes the overall experience so much better. You could get one of these aftermarket for cheaper, but it would require partitioning, installing Windows, etc. I paid to get mine from Dell and I'm satisfied with it that way, coming already setup and configured to use.
I would recommend going with the cheapest possible RAM and swapping it out with Kingstons.
I don't use the 3D all the time, but when I do I love it, and the 120hz screen is fantastic. To me it is a much better experience than I've gotten on any 3DTV, especially for movies. In games, 3D will hinder how high you can run textures, so it's up to you whether you prefer higher textures or 3D immersion. The other downfall of the 3D is that you are restricted to only Nvidia cards. (I personally don't mind as I've always had a much better experience with Nvidia.)
Ideally, I'd like to hop over to the 580m but I'm waiting to see if the throttling issues will be resolved before I make the plunge. I may wait on the 680m if it will be supported on the R3.
On the processing side, I'm content with the i7-2720QM, it's more than enough for anything I'll be throwing at it, and was the best value when I configured my unit with Dell.
I'm in the US and don't know much about international, I wish I could help you more on that one.
In terms of R2 vs R3.. The biggest points I know of are:
R2: Dual graphics cards, RGBLED, a bit bigger/heavier, more of a rough-textured trackpad, and touch buttons to the top/right of the keyboard, and a harder aluminum lid. Note that the main successor of the R2 would really be the M18x.
R3: Sandy bridge, 3D available, a bit lighter, smoother trackpad, physical buttons to the top/right of the keyboard, soft-touch rubber coated lid, and currently in production.
I hope this post helped you a bit! -

Here are three existing threads that would be a good place for this discussion. The first one is probably the best choice, but the questions would be on-topic in the other two as well.
