I purchased my M17x almost 2 summers ago and back when I bought it, it came with an Intel Core 2 Duo (P8700 @ 2.53GHz) And now I want to add either an i5 or i7 (preferably an i7.)

I have a couple questions for those who may have done this in the past:
    1. Are the sockets and pins the same?
    2. If they aren't the same, what processors are compatible to add into the M17x - and where can I find these processors for a reasonable cost?

If you have any info on this, that would be great :)

    Thanks for your time!

Going to a core-i is only possible with a mobo swap. Your best bet is a qx9300 or an ES chip on ebay. Maybe a Q9200. only a core 2 or core 2 quad will work. :(

It is possible the best you can do is the x9100 - very overclockable. But you MAY be able to do a quad core. But no way can you do i5/i7. Different chipset/socket, etc

I am actually selling my x9100 soon - it handles 3.6 GHZ easily.

    QX9300 is king!
    the end

I bought mine new/OEM/very cheap off eBay (result of daily eBay camping over a couple of months :D)

    Cheers

X9100 will be the fastest dual core you can use. The QX9300 will be the fastest quad core you can use.
