Unless you know what your doing and the consequences of the updates.
I have spent a lot of time reading on this forum, ( Great Site), There is a ton of information on here,to do just about anything to your M17x, but after reading about all the complaints on here, I noticed that a lot of people really don't know what they are doing, as soon as they get the laptop out of the box, they have a list of updates, changes, driver updates.
This is an excellent forum with brilliant talent, but please those of you who are new to this IMHO should leave your M17x alone and enjoy it a while before you go tearing it apart.
Most of the complaints are due to user error, not Alienware. I know they are not perfect, but I think when you receive your new system, Alienware installed the best, stable drivers available for the average user.
When you update to Beta drivers and or drivers not released from Dell, you will not be happy with the outcome and frustration is the next step to unhappy Alienware owners.
I have put my Flame suit on, just in case some of you need to vent or disagree.
BTW this is just my opinion.
Of course this does not apply to everybody.

I agree that most people shouldn't change things up unless there is a specific reason. Most of the time they won't notice a differance, and when things start changing they also effect the registry which can cause issues. I say simply enjoy it, and get your game on!
One of the reasons I never changed drivers unless there was a clear benefit to them. When I'm not benchmarking, I run everything at factory stock settings, and most if not all stock drivers. -
Oh, and lets not forget updating the Bios when there was no real need for it. Like the A07 for the r2 or the A04 which now forces you to update to the A05 or back down to the A03 for the r1.
-
true for the r2, for the r1 updating was necessary, it was shipped with bios A02 and an old driver which made it a dpc spike fest (even when A03 and the fixed driver were released) but yeah after that initial update no need for more as they would only screw it up more (bios a04)
-
there's a reason why they're called beta after all.
about the bios updates, i have mixed feelings... i'm glad they're actually showing a continuous effort in their products, but having these issues pop up again and again is rather frustrating (not to mention bios updates make me hold my breath till the reset). -
AlienWho,
That is the best advice I have ever read on this forum bar none. Alienware and Falcon gave me the same advice. -
We sometimes read with excitement all the cool mods, driver, Bios updates to speed up our beloved M17x and we all want to turn our laptop's into a Super Computer, but a lot us turn our M17x's into slow, sputtering hunks of metal, and sometimes into $3000, $4000+ Bricks. Than the call goes out to Alienware, unfortunately most Phone Techs at Alienware can't tie their own shoes let alone undo all the mess in the bricked M17x. -
Well, that is what one should expect when paying this kind of money for a computer, but for me, it was absolutely necessary to perform all of these driver updates to get the computer to perform as advertised. Believe me, I would have loved nothing more than to have taken it out of the box and for the machine to have performed flawlessly. Sadly, that wasn't the case.

I assume that theres an Alienware for Dummies book out there right?
I'm sure this is what Dell techs use.
