Hi folks, I've noticed that a lot of M17x R2's with warranties are going up for sell at the moment, and I'm considering getting one. I've noticed the R2 has been discontinued in the US, but is still available on the European site (for now).

My question is if I buy an R2 that has officially been discontinued, what happens warranty wise when Dell runs out of a part that is needed for repair?

Now I've read around this and the answer appears to be that they would upgrade your machine to an R3, or give you a refund. Is there a way to determine which would be offered, i.e. does this depend on warranty length, whether it is dell refurbished or not, or just the rep you happen to deal with on the phone at the time?

The predicament for me would be if I bought a dell refurbished/non-refurb R2 from a seller with a 2 year warranty, and dell runs out of a replacement part, they may just refund the amount that the original seller bought it for, which may be actually substantially less than what I paid for it. Leaving me out of pocket. I did read a thread were this happened (though i can't find it now). Just need to know whether this is a gamble or not so-wise move under the circumstances. Thanks.

I dont think its a wise move over paying for anything. Because its an older laptop you should be looking to pay a lot less. My guess is that hes selling it to buy a r3 or 18x.

Sure, but the selling prices seem much less than those on the European Dell site and are still in warranty. I'm asking whether buying an R2 now which is being discontinued is a wise move, i.e. under warranty, is Dell likely to refund the amount the original seller paid for it (refurb. or otherwise) or replace the R2 with a R3 if repair parts for the R2 run out.

Anyone have an options or experience on this please?

Does Dell Europe have an outlet? You can get an R2 significantly cheaper this way and even save more with possible outlet coupon.

Or another option, is to buy an r2 second had from someone here in marketplace, other tech sites, or locally. Owner would be selling laptop cheaper than original invoice. Plus, you can buy a warranty extension for your r2 thru dell (but better if r2 still has remaining warranty on it, b/c cheaper to extend this way)

Last option, is if you have travel to USA or have family/friends who live here, they can order from outlet and send it to you or bring it w/ them to you. I'm not 100% sure about international warranty transfers.

    1. depending on waiting time for part, they will fix or may give you an option to upgrade, but your warranty and r2 will always be honored during it warranty period.
    2. real factor on what options dell gives you is waiting time for parts from what i gather form nbr.
3.dell's warranty looks at all r2s as the same whether it is 2nd hand owner, refurbished, or bought as new.

    Hi thanks for the responses.

To shorten my original question: When the R2 is fully discontinued and eventually Dell runs out of repair parts for it under warranty, which is more likely a replacement R3, or will they offer a refund of the original price paid. As there have been examples of both outcomes being possible. That's all I want to know really.

If you buy directly from Dell, there is a greater chance they will make things right. If you buy from a third-party, Dell probably sold it to them at a discounted price and the maximum liability that Dell is probably going to take on is the price that the third-party paid. You should read the fine print from the third-party before you buy.

You might want to consider an aftermarket warranty like squaretrade that might cover your full purchase price on ebay.

Cheers :) That makes sense. So if the original price paid for it was say £800 for a refurb and sold to me for £1200, then dell is likely to refund the £800 rather than give you an R3 upgrade (which might be around £1500). That is quite logical actually.

That sounds like a good idea. Thanks.

i do know that you can get a warranty after one expired as well if that means anything to you. i bought my m17x from another NBR'r but it had no warranty, so i rang up dell and asked them if i could get a warranty after it expired.

and they said yes and gave me a quote. just a heads up.

edit: read this , and thanks for actually posting this, because you reminded me of updating my old thread. :D
