    Evening all,

The warranty for my M17x (R1) is about to expire in about 2 weeks and I was hoping that some of you would give me some advice weather to renew it . I have already been quoted as follows:

1 year next business day warranty : £175
2 year next business day warranty : £375

My intention is to give dell a call early next week to try and haggle the price down, if I choose to proceed.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

It depends on the history of your laptop.
    - If you haven't had any problems before then maybe not BUT it doesn't mean you will not get any problem in the future. Maybe this is just the perfect time to get an extension as the parts gets older and may need replacement soon.
    - Also if you plan on using the laptop for a year or more then its really advisable to get an extension.

But its really important to negotiate to save some $$$. £££ in your case :D

That's actually a good advice. If you're not getting a new computer within the next year or so, it is recommendable. Check out this article to learn more about a warranty extension.

Trust me Its worth haggling the quote. I had the same problem with my r2. I rung them up and got a price of £350 for 3 years NBD. I thought was expensive. I phone them a second time and was quoted the same but if i left it another week the price would of gone up to £600 which is rip off. So in a last ditch atempt I e-mailed tech support. i thought there was a mistake £140 for 3years NBD but it was true.

Just checked the invoice they said it was a special promo (yeah right) 3 years for price of 2.

So you should be looking at £140 as a ball park figure

I have to say the agent that quoted the high price was not the most helpful REP i spoke to and would not lower the price at all, but the one that quoted £140 was nice as pie.

    Hope that helps.

BTW (i had a motherboard and psu replacement before extention of warrenty)

I would, I have friends with alienware models and there laptops worked near flawlessly for around a one year and a few months afterwards, but after that they noticed issues with their hdd and gpu, but they did not get the warranty, so it they could not get it fixed.

I threw down $450 for the extension on mine. Good thing, too; it paid for itself within two calls when things started going wonky. Check out the prices on motherboard parts alone if you don't believe me, and never mind the cost of a in-home tech install and test. Worth every penny.

So, in a word, yes. Completely worth it.

Many thanks for the replies guys, I will see on Monday when I will ring them up and try and knock them down from £175 for a 12 months. My r1 is now 3 years old, but touch wood was not had anthing fail on it (with the exception of a separately bought OZC vertez 2 SSD which went pop after 18 months a few weeks ago). I'm definitely not planning to get a new one as yet.

I thought I let you know that Alienware maximum warranty is 5 years from Delivery date. They won't cover over that term

Good luck, let me know how you get on
