So the tech that came to replace the screen and media keys was very knowledgeable and was very nice. once we got it all taken apart and put back together, he hit the power button and the cord that connects to the mobo for the media keys shorted out. . it also blow out the mobo. :( so we called dell and they now want to send it out to a depot. I guess im gonna be without a computer for a while. :( hope the computer doesn't get damaged any worse. :(

You have NBD and the tech. messed up!

I cant believe depot is the only option?! Or are they just saying that so they dont have to send out a new system. They must honnor the warrenty you paid for!

You could try that option. Make sure you got the name/number of the person you talk to and let them send a email to you with what you discussed.

If you send it out and receive it damaged or not fixed you can demand a new system or Dell will offer you one if its not fixable.

bigtony, tell them you will sue them, this is really unreasonable, their tech kills the laptop, you get to wait for a month for repairs, don't accept it no matter what, this is really ridiculous, just call everyone and say I want a replacement, I need the computer for business, and so on!

Buy a caddy and make the drive external so you can acces the data for school. Like others said tell Dell you need the laptop and you want a new system.

Exact same thing happened to me also. When I was having problems with the RAM, during the troubleshooting part, one of the things they tried was to have a mobo swap. Tech guy was really careful and all, and I watched him like a hawk. But when it came to powering it up, blue light went out and stayed out. He had to come back next day with another mobo as well as gfx card etc...

    I would be outraged.

This... No one can take care better of your system than you. That is why I don't extend my warranty. If I have to fix something I do it by myself. Already changed my palmrest and my keyborad, and everything is perfect.

    Right.. Dell in a nutshell.

Call them up, tell them that you're pissed, tell them that its your work / business PC aswell as School PC, and that because of them, you lost an contract that was worth an four-numbered amount. Tell them that you're sewing them unless they patch things up a bit. If the guy/ gal you're talking to says that thats not possible, demand that you want to talk to their boss.

    - Scott.

Yeah, whn the tech screwed up my system they wanted me to return it too and I stayed on the phone for an HOUR telling them NO way, made them get a supervisor, until they sent another tech to replace the part the previous tech screwed up. I did let the tech do it and this is the reason why. Imagine if the tech is right and it IS a Dell design flaw you would be SOL convincing them to warranty the computer. If this shorted out the mobo I would ABOSULTELY demand a new machine. That could damage the CPU, RAM, GPU and anything else you have attached to that board. Tell them if they want to try and avoid replacement on a machine with a recognized short then they will have to reset your warranty. Don't settle man, they will just turn your machine into a refurbished model and make money again off another customer. How many hours or days did you have to work o get the money for the machine? The way I see it is it's worth every second on the phone not having those drops of blood, sweat, and tears not being flushed down the toilet because they want to be shysters.

But yeah I had to keep reminding them I need my machine for work and classes I'm taking and that I don't have the ability to go without my computer for a week because their tech screwed up. Maybe I could have used the wife's MBP or the ipad but why should I? It wasn't my error.

man, this is really outrageous, thanks to idiots you are laptopless for a while, seriously bigtony, call them 10 times everyday and ask for a supervisor... hope they will send you a replacement unit soon, also I am sure they don't have anymore gtx 460m's in stock, so if you get a replacement it will come with a better card :)

on the other hand, I just checked afess and its only $1518.00 for a machine with 1080p and the 580m  really tempted to sell my old one and get a really nice new one. Gotta wait and see what dell does to my old one though. :D

Why does anybody bother going through dell tech support? Email [email protected] and you get proper help straight away. I had my 6970m fry and they sent me a new laptop straight away. I had called dell tech support and got the usual run around, dell exec service is so much nicer.

Yep that's the email I use to get tech support now. Sad but all I have to do in type an email and resolve it in a few short email sessions. That's it. No more 1-2 hour phone calls and disconnects!

Bigtony, if you're going to keep it and upgrade the LCD let me know. I have a spare, brand new OEM 1080p 3D assembly (without the back cover).
