Greetings brethren! I just wanted to ask what is currently the most powerful graphics card I can stick in my Ranger. I've been rocking a 1060 for almost 2 years now, and it's been a great card! It allows for a solid 60 FPS in all my games. Unfortunately it doesn't satisfy my requirements anymore as the 120 Hz screen has spoiled me, and I now require that 120 FPS goodness. Since I can't get that in my newest games (without turning down settings, boooo), I'm looking for another upgrade.
To my understanding, the Quadro P5200 offers GTX 1080 level performance, and is the most powerful graphics card that is theoretically compatible with the AW 17 R1. Has anyone tested if this card actually works in the Ranger?
Furthermore, I don't know of any RTX MXM cards that will fit in this laptop as of today. Has anyone seen an MSI RTX 2070 MXM module? If so, is it in the same form factor as their 1070 MXM module?
-
There is also the rtx 5000 but due to the price of it and the p5200 no one here has yet to try them in our chassis when the 1070 is much cheaper.
If you go the 1070 route you'll need to flash the vbios with a programmer to get more tdp allowance to maintain higher clocks, naturally the memory also can overclock as well.
Otherwise you'd be in uncharted territory with the other mentioned cards and I too would be very interested to see the results.
I haven't seen much of the rtx mxm cards yet, but I also haven't been looking either lol. A 2070 would be a nice addition even over the 1070.Rengsey R. H. Jr. likes this. -

Where is the rtx 5000? Never seen or heard of it.

That makes total sense. The Quadro P5200 and the Quadro RTX 5000 both have exorbitant price tags, so no wonder people are hesitant to try them out, especially since the 1070 is far better in terms of price/performance ratio. I'd love to be rocking a card with RTX 2080 level performance though, that'd be sweet! Too bad the RTX 5000 is like $1800 USD.
It's a slightly bloated form factor MXM module, so it looks like it would require minimal chassis modding to make it fit. No stupid extra power connector either. If it turns out is does in fact work in the R1, we may need a custom heatsink for it because of the placement of the VRAM chips.
Dell made a DGFF version of the card as well:
I'd prefer getting an actual RTX 2070 or 2080 MXM module though since I wouldn't have to pay for the extra features in a Quadro card that I don't need.Striker1234 and Rengsey R. H. Jr. like this. -
Update: I did some research and found that MSI changed the form factor of their cards again with their RTX 2000 series. I guess we won't be sticking one of those in our Rangers. Hopefully some other company makes these in standard MXM form factor.
New MSI MXM Form Factor:
This is the 2080, but I think their 2070 is in the same form factor. Not sure about their 2060, but I'm betting on it being in this form factor as well.
I am interested in seeing a complete disassembly of the new Zotac Zbox MAGNUS EN72070V. Perhaps we can do something similar to what Striker1234 did and pull the card out of this mini PC, flash it with a new VBIOS, and run it in our Rangers. Zotac used standard form factor MXM modules in their lineup with Pascal graphics cards (minus the 1080, which actually was only a bit taller than reference design), so they may be our best bet at upgrading our Rangers just once more before the CPU in this laptop model starts becoming a bottleneck for ever faster graphics cards.Last edited: Oct 15, 2019 -
I'm hoping for either 2070 or Navi myself.
Mostly so I can finally have 1080ish performance -
Any chance these future cards would not need HwInfo to manage the fans?

For me I dont really care about specific fan control, I cut the PWM cable after getting the laptop lol

1070, anything higher will TDP throttle, you'd have to look at the RTX 5000 to really see any major gains over the 1070, It'll be TDP throttled at stock TDP, but it should be marginally faster, it'll need a VBIOS chip soldered onto it as well, and will certainly run you a pretty penny, likely more than a modern 2060-2070 laptop which will destroy it and the Ranger utterly.
-
Or just wait for more options to surface, sell the current GPU and walk away with a minor investment.
The Ranger is still quite capable of punching up. The only difficult part is getting the CPU to 4.5Ghz -
Where's that Quadro RTX 5000 mxm for sale at?
This GPU is probably the most cost effective right now as a direct upgrade for the R1: https://www.ebay.com/itm/For-Dell-H...248714?hash=item2abc16f98a:g:mPQAAOSwkR5c64Og
It won't provide a super big performance boost but it should definitely give an improvement.
Looks like Quadro RTX 5000 is 80W TDP. Definitely would want to TDP mod that to 100W at least

Yeah would love an rtx 5000 modded to 115w if it works. Investing a lot of money into fitness/health so I can't take the plunge to see if it works. It's basically around gtx 1080 performance iirc?
-
Pretty sure once you start getting into the GTX 1080 performance territory your 4th gen i7 is going to start becoming a bottleneck, GeCube has an "improved" 1070 with 150W TDP compared to the usual 120W of regular 1070 MXM, I dunno how good this GeCube "improved" version is considering their previous history with the 1070.
I might take a risk and go for it, its a regular MXM size and 150W TDP is pretty good, I know that you can do 190W through the port but this might be a problem trying to cool it even with a custom heatsink in the Alienware as they are very much thinner than their Clevo counterparts.
But seriously, do not go for a Quadro, you cannot even overclock them anymore as they are locked down FAR more than the consumer cards and that extra bit of juice is not really worth it considering how expensive they are unless you REALLY need RTX, but at this point it would be CHEAPER to just buy a new laptop than to buy a Quadro, trust me I played with the idea and when I found those Quadros on Taobao, I went outside to punch myself as I could not believe I was seeing things right. -
My 4930mx at 3.4GHz still pushes my 1070 just fine in the games I play. 4.3Ghz+ should be fine for 1080 or 2080 levels of performance. However thats likely to be where the line of balance is met.
There is no laptop that exists that could replace my ranger even with modifications, so while buying another laptop may well be a better route for most, its not a potential option for me.
I don't personally desire rtx, only the performance it brings over my 1070. I'm not in a rush to buy right now anyways, but it's always good to have a look at the horizon.
I'll keep upgrading this thing until I buy a desktop. -
All depends on those clock speeds. It's definitely an interesting card.M18x-oldie and uugui shi like this. -

Yeah, I'd also say Ivy and Hasy Quads should still be powerful enough, even nowadays.

I found the card on eBay for $1,799 but it was sold. That's quite a price. I remember the P5000 was expensive too at first, now it can be found for $899 new sometimes.
If that card was around $1,000 it would definitely be an interesting upgrade. To be fair even $1,799 isn't a bad deal considering the desktop version is over $2.2k:

Also I agree. 2nd gen i7 + is still relevant especially when overclocked to 4Ghz+. I run my 3920XM at 4.2Ghz all-core turbo, 4.3Ghz dual core and 4.4Ghz single core and it runs well. Within 6700 series speeds. It may be quad-core but those 8 threads have never been so relevant thanks to all the new 6/8+ core CPUs.Reciever and M18x-oldie like this. -
Yeah I might be willing to try it for 1k or so, just have to wait and see if the prices drop. Would probably make for the last noteworthy upgrade before its creates a bit of an imbalance.

Interesting thread. My M17x r4 is reaching 8 year old and it's still running strong for what I need.

Update: So apparently PNY is planning on relasing a Quadro RTX 5000 in 2020. Looks like it may be in standard MXM form factor, and the TDP is 110 watts instead of the 80 watt TDP of the HP variant. That's still seriously limiting, but it's a step forward. I have no idea if this would actually work in our Rangers, but hopefully it's a sign of good things to come.

Issue here is PNY. Last time I asked, they would not sell me a P5000 MXM card. Only hope is we see a RTX 5000 in standard MXM from those chinese resellers on ebayM18x-oldie likes this. -

I am unfamiliar with the TDP on the newer 1060 and 1070 cards floating around from MSI, HP and so on. HP cards might be a higher TDP of 150-160W

Woah, paying $1K for a GPU that is slower than a sub $200 desktop GPU

I do have some good news for those who want to continue upgrading their Rangers. The Turing lineup may in fact see a release in standard MXM form factor near the end of this year.
Link: Zotac has officially abandoned the mxm format on the new EN72070V
I have to stress though that this is a BIG maybe, but it gives us hope. If this does come to frution, a chassis mod will be required if 2060, 2070, and 2080 cores get frankensteined onto an HP card, but such a mod should be minimal since the card only protrudes out slightly on the right side compared to standard MXM. It looks like a protrusion that is a millimeter in length or so, so we just need some sandpaper to sand down the divider to the right of the GPU.
Just... one... more... upgrade!
I'll probably be saying that till the day the CPU becomes a bottleneck in games for me.Last edited: May 28, 2020M18x-oldie and Semmy like this. -

Anyone could figure out in a couple keystrokes you can get better value per dollar in a desktop form factor, but then its not MXM? Not sure why you even brought it up unless you just enjoy thread crapping.
