Hi all,
I've read in a few places that lifting the back of your M17X R3/R4 will improve airflow circulation and decrease temperature.
I'm starting this thread asking for suggestions on what are you using to lift the back of your laptop.
Right now, I'm using a deck of cards and its working really well. I'm looking for a product designed for this (not cooling tray).

A book or two.
-
There are plenty of products out there that are designed for this function. Here are a few examples:
Belkin Laptop Cooling Strip
Bluelounge Cool Feet
Xpad
There was also a nice looking (and relatively expensive) metal version that I can't seem to find ATM. -
Another product designed for this is gatorade bottle lids. They are really cheap and function exceptionally well. Easily placed and removed. Here is a link:

i use an antec cooler mini..

The Revelator Notebook Prophet
Expensive, but nice: Amazon.com: Just Mobile Lazy Couch. Works very well with the R3.
-
Couple of 0.5 x 3 x 3 wooden blocks (from a toy set). Eventually I'll get a Zalman NC-3000S Notebook Cooler.
-
I put the Xbox 360 wireless receiver under the back right in the center. I'm usually using it to play a game but even when I'm not it's stil handy because it's always in my Everki backpack.
-
I don't have an R3/4 but I use a pair of 3 pound dumbbells to raise my lappie
-
Pair of rubber dices
-
two of the advanced hi-tech bottle caps
-
I'm using a coolermaster U3.
-
SlickDude80 Notebook Prophet
I'm using two flat bottlecaps...one on either side.
-
i use my reciept book on top of my calculator.
-
How about a DVD case? That's what I'm using for my R1.
-
An unopened pack of index cards. -

I just got the Targus 17" coolerpad to replace the wood blocks. Very pleased, works fine AND my laptop returns to my lap! Got a nice comfortable soft cover and temps are a couple of C cooler...
-
Camera lens cap.
Not the lens cap that goes on in the front, the ones that go on behind the lens to protect the connection points to the DSLR. -
The first trick I learned about my R3 and from joining this forum a year ago was to use SlickDude80's bottlecaps! However, I've recently ordered the Cooler Master NotePal U3 Notebook Cooler with 3 Fans R9-NBC-8PCK-G cuz it just looks cool (.. and I do have other users for it.
On another note, I've had my R3 for year now and noticed GPU running hotter than normal so I popped the cover and sucked out all the crap with the vacumm cleaner extension.. just placed the hose right over the two fans. Now it's running 7-10 degrees cooler. I didn't think it look bad at all inside but dam, something must of been in there...
Maybe I shouldn't wait so long next time.

This really caught my attention: Cricket Laptop Stand

My question is, does the M17X R4 really need a cooling pad? I've been playing Diablo 3 on high res for hours and my GPU temp stays at 68 without lifting the back. Maybe because my table is glass? -
I use this Antec Notebook Cooler to go
I bought it sale for $8 -

doesn't look like you need one. Just lift up the back with a few bottlecaps for even cooler temps -
I've noticed table surfaces matter as well, black/metal surfaces will just reflect the heat back toward the laptop.

Guess it depends on your environment but after just 3 months mine was pretty much clogged up and temps were rising. I got a can of compressed air and run it through backwards but the vac sounds like a good idea
For me, yes. If you are running nice low temps like that on a flat surface then you're good to go. I run about 63-67 in high stress games.
When looking at cooling pads you need to get your priorities as they all compromise somewhere. The hardcore OC'er will like positional fans and no extra obstruction. Some will be looking for the adjustable angle for the KB, or portability like the one above. Even just cos it looks cool!
For me it was just to remove the hassle of blocks and be able to move it easilly. I saw that Dell now offer this pad so gave it a try - just what I was looking for
Edit: Just checked the price on Amazon and it bundled in a can of compressed air as a 'frequently bought together' item - nice try! -
Used a black round leg called cooler ball/cool ball laptop leg/laptop stand from ebay, costing 2-3$. Matches my black r3 colour and you don't have to carry it separately. Placed it at the middle, enough space between the two so the r3 is stable - didn't placed at the left and right edges since there's no space and there's fans there. Initially it looks too small to give enough lift but there's no difference.

This is really helpful. The reason why I'm going with a stand is because the cooling pad that I really like is out of stock everywhere. I was looking at the NZXT Cryo LX. It has full body aluminum with 2 large fans - plus you can fold it to be more portable.
I guess I'm just overthinking this since my temps are good anyway. -
I use a Macbook to prop up my R3

hahahahaha...ok, that's the best mod i've read all day...the m17x "MACBOOK" mod + -
Hehe.
I gotta give it to Apple, they know how to corner the market. They even did a mini version for people on a tight budget....

If you can be bothered with the horrible software, this one plays music too
-
Cryo LX notebook cooler. Been using it since before I got my M17x R2.
-
I really want this product but it is sold out everywhere. Every product comparison page and forum out there is giving great reviews on this product
What are you using to lift the back of your M17X R3/R4 for better ventilation?
