Hi![]()
Trying to prepare for the arrival of my m17x and will be bringing it alot to work during weekends and late nights. However I've heard that a sidebag is not an option due to the weight and strain it might cause only caring it on one of the shoulders.
A few things I was wondering, whats the measurements of a m17x abit late here in Sweden for my brain to work properly![]()
Thanks for the help!

Targus City Gear 17" Backback.
Laptop Backpacks|TCG216US| by Targus
I've had a couple and this one works great. It's not the first one I've had but it's probably the best for this beast of a laptop. Durably made (I fly twice weekly), more storage space then you would ever practically use and fits well. My last bag lacked padding around the zipper area which resulted in dings in my laptop case from airline seat bolts. The m17x fits in the pouch very well and the velcro strap even latches with the laptop in place.
Personally I'm not keen on the Alienware branded bags. I'm sure they are fine, but walking around with one seems like a bit of a bullseye for theft to me.

A Jamesport backpack I picked up from an expo in Taiwan... It's very neat, and could easily fit a 15" laptop
It's been rather comfortable on my shoulders for the past 4 years (last time I've been home...).

There are already some really great threads on backpacks that will accommodate the size/weight of an M17x.
You may also want to look into a thicker/padded laptop sleeve (search function should be able to point you in the right direction).

I got the Alienware Orion Backpack, and I'm very happy about it. In fact, I used it to carry my work laptop to a training meeting in Houston last week. LOL. It looks cool and so spacious that I prefer to use it to carry my work laptop than a company-provided messenger bag.

I am the odd ball here: I have the Slappa Matrix for the 17in laptops:
Amazon.com: Slappa SL-LP-26 Velocity MATRIX Backpack/Laptop Bag (Black): Office Products
It works well for me, but I haven't tried to put the M17X and the M11X in it at the same time. I've heard it will do it though. -

I take mine everywhere!!

I use a separate bag for my laptop cooler and all my other goodies.
Yes it's 2 things to carry but I have big arms and my M17X will never get damaged in that bad boy. -

Man that looks like one bad- caseI'd like to paint one red like the convertible Ironman suit.
I received my Alienware Orion Backpack today. I like when it's empty, it doesn't take much space at all. It expands to your needs. Also, like another big review thread mentions, it feels so light with my M17x in it, unlike my Booq Boa bag where it felt burdensome -
Thanks for all the tips!
Defo have my mind on a Targus bag seems to be good quality and since I can't wait for a Orion bag to be shipped to Sweden the Targus is at my door tomorow -

I've had lots of different 17" laptop backpacks over the years. I've settled on the Swissgear Carbon for my M17x. Its a very tight fit but is very compact and beautifully made. You can get a very similar one in blue - pocket/zip details are different - but my favourite design -in black - is only available in UK from Apple online, you need to search for 17" laptops for previous generation powerbooks to find it. Can't recommend this bag highly enough.

i just bought the Everki 18'' laptop bag from Fry's and the M17x fits perfectly with room to spare. the quality of this bag is excellent.
i also have the Booq Mambda Shift L (used for school carrying my macbook pro)and I would say the Everki use better materials and more solidly built. plus, its also cheaper than the Booq. It even has a rain jacket cover which can be put on and taken off.
im glad to read about this bag here (different thread) as i was almost going to buy the orion bag from dell but is currently sold out. i think i made the right choice because this bag looks way better than the orion alienware. -
here are some pictures -
Picked up the Targus CityGear and Everki backpack.
Targus - $60
Everki - $130
Both are well made but the Everki is definitely a notch above. In addition the Everki is well padded in every which way. This adds in what feels like twice the weight compare to the Targus. However, if you are concern about your laptop and want good padding, the Everki is for you. It is also more comfortable on your back due to its design; and the chest strap is really a nice touch. However, the design of the pack itself with the top sloping off at a steep angle is not very user friendly imo. For one, it dramatically decreases its height and you be hard press to fit many of the same height items in there.
The Targus is no slotch but padding is minimal. It has a lot more pockets than the Everki and seems more versatile because of this. I've yet to place the M17x in it as it's in transit. However regarding their size the backpacks are quite acceptable. They are NOT as big as I was led to believe reading the posts here. I'm 5'2 and medium built and both backpacks are fine. The Targus, imo, is better designed as well. It's a regular backpack but can expand length-wise if need too. You can indeed place what appears to be enough room for 3 M17x. Again, the packs are NOT as big as you may thing...for a 5'2 person!
I'm giving them a run through this week to see which one I would prefer. I'm already leaning towards the Targus. The Everki will tip over even without a laptop in it. This is quite disappointing actually. The Targus doesn't. But boy oh boy, the padding on the Everki is really really nice to have. Just have to justify the price!
Hope this helps. I can do a more in-depth review if you guys want
Edit: grammar/mispellings -
I use an aluminum briefcase, which I modified with foam inserts and there is still just enough room for the power adapter in the file divider on the top portion. Fits like a glove, since I kept trimming the foam until it just barley fit. Combo lock gives nice security and the strap I added lets me carry it on my shoulder rather then by the handle. It is heavy, but I know its VERY safe.
The only draw back is that it was VERY hard to find a case like this that was 4"X18"X13", since most are 12.5" not 13", and the M17x is 12.7".
And I don't have a wrist cuff, but I would really like to add one.Attached Files:

I use the Alienware backpack. Lots of room, fits my baby nice and snug

Carrying two cases/packs to/from work is too much for me; rather unnecessary. I'm already using my backpack as dead weight on my business trips overseas and that's plenty enough for a full day
I use those type of cases quite often in the past for special devices (Accelerometers, fine gages, sound level meters, cameras, videos, etc.) They work great for packing just those items hahahaha -
Returning the Everki. It's very cumbersome for daily use. The design looks alright to begin with but is painful to use after a while. There is only one zipper for both top locations. When fully closed the zipper is on the side, meaning often times you have to turn the bag around to get to it. In addition, the slop of the bag design makes it difficult to put stuff in and remove them. It's just not as user-friendly as it appears to be.
The shoulder straps are quite nice but if you plan on wearing a muscle shirt you'll be hurting bad. This is, once again, due to the design of the strap itself. It's coarse so it's digs into your skin. Great for when you have a shirt between but not so with bare skin
Third the bag is not user friendly to "pick up and go." By this I mean not as easy as a regular design backpack that you can easily grab. Due to the sloping design you'll find yourself missing and looking for the handle. Urgh. Add to that the bag always falling forward it becomes really annoying.
In short, not a very user-friendly backpack at all. Padding is extremely nice. Chest strap is very useful.
I carried about ~30lbs of weight in it for testing today. 2 15" laptops, power supplies, phone, cables, DS, PSP, batteries + charger, paperwork, etc. Comfortable but not user friendly
What backpack are you using?
