I'm sure there's more guys out there who do move their machine around alot. I use a laptop at work everyday therefore I lug it to and from work everyday. I've had my share of bags and backpacks for my MacBook pro including incase, Swiss, targus, booq and brenthaven.

I have the Orion backpack I got with my r2 but I feel it just lacking a few compartments with zips for my taste. I'm also trying to figure a neat way to stuff the power brick in there. I can't help but make excuses to pick up a bag that has better compartments including a much better padded laptop specific area instead of the cheap strap and half pouch in the Orion bag. At the same time I don't feel like taking the Orion to work it will get destroyed and it's too pretty for that.

What backpacks do you guys use or what brands/models do you recommend?

I like the looks of the Orion backpack but it has worn a hole in the bottom after 6 months of use. M17x's angles take a toll.

Cool stuff It would have taken me too long to find these brands and models! I'll be checking them out! I alloy always wrap the bottom and bottom sides in black duct-like tape to prevent wear. I find that most bags die only because the bottom shreds.

I like the Orion bag. It looks phenomenal. My only gripe are the laptop specific compartment not being so well padded an protected especially considering the weight of the r2. I also don't like the sleeve going halfway and not offering much padding. I need space for my mouse (g9x) I find it fits best in the outside pocket to the sides of the alienware logo but I fear bumping the bag or even tipping it over would crush the mouse in time.

Another alternative I figured was to buy a foam-like neoprene sleeve for the laptop and to use the Orion bag. Anyone know if there are sleeves that will work with the r2?

Then I could always add my own mouse pocket in the 2nd compartment it would just take a little sewing. There are plenty of zips that will hol all my usb cables and wireless headphones (sa7). I'm thinking to maybe reinforce the bottom somehow as well... This could be fun lol

Slappa Velocity Matrix pro (review in my sig). I'm very happy, even though I'm not taking the laptop out that often. But when I do, I obviously keep it safe like a baby. :)

Nice review on that velocity bag! Seems like it's lacking the protection I'm after though. I like how the mask has 3 separate compartments and even the face with 3 perfect sized pockets for me. Seems as though the mask will be bigger loaded up but i think it suits me better. So far I have my eyes on the mask and a slappa 17" sleeve for double the protection. I also ordered zagg shield that I'm going to cut to shape for the palmrests, lid and screen. I guess I'm too anal about it but it makes me feel better.

I just can't get over the fact that there might be a better bag than the Orion ... It's going to kill me if I don't use it lol

my wife got me a slappa mask koa (the 3 pockets on the face one). it's an excellent bag, well-built and spacious but i think i'm going to sell it or return it.

I dumped my current swissgear bag's contents on the table and couldn't get it all into the slappa in a way that worked for me. the slappa has more volume but the swissgear has more pouches and pockets and holders and things...

There's no worries about the m17x fitting in this bag - the built-in laptop sleeve just swallows the laptop - with appetite to spare... :)

If you want to sell it shoot me a pm I may be interested if the deal is good :) I think thats the one I liked too with the pockets on the face. So the m17x will fit good even with a sleeve case on the laptop in this backpack? if you have any pics I would LOVE to see them !! I'm going to google mobile edge now..

    LMAO !!

i'll try to take some pics when i get home tomorrow.

I don't have a full sleeve case for the m17x (just a micro-fiber sleeve for the screen half) and frankly - you don't need one with the slappa. I haven't seen a sleeve that fit the bulky/edgy/dang thing anyways....

The XPS back pack is awesome! I was fail and sold mine to get the orion bag to match. The M1730 bag was nicer. That's the life of a fanboi, form over function.

    It will be fine.

Here are some pics I just took.

The first two show the m17x-R2 in the laptop enclosure with a pair of 150 page books to simulate a sleeve.

The second two pics show the laptop in the enclosure by itself.

The flap covers the whole thing easily.

I use the Orion backpack for my M17x-R2 as well. Its very sturdy and has alot of room. For going on airplanes and long trips I also pack the laptop in a neoprene sleeve to give it added padding. No issues at all. I found the neoprene sleeve on Amazon, by Built 17 inch Widescreen. Fits just like a glove.

I had ordered the orion backpack last month 30th as it was said on dell's site that it would ship in 24 hours.. But after a day I got the EDD stating it would arrive on march 4th 2011.. I gave them a call asking if its true and they tell told me i should get it by 4th jan aaand as usual I didnt get it then so I called again and now they are asking me to wait a week and I should be getting it around 20th (I had a LOT of previous experience with these dates dell gave... learned not to trust them)... and I am leaving the country around 26th Jan so I didnt want to take any chances and requested to cancel the order on 10th at some 11am... at around 1pm the same day I got a call from a delivery guy who was just outside my house. I was expecting an other delivery too from an amazon vendor for a logitech lapdesk so I imagined it would be that and signed for it... The sender address was not dell and looked new to me so guessed it must be the lapdesk (which is a very large laptop stand). I opened it and to my surprise there is this orion backpack in it .... and they already sent me the money... lol... any way I sent an email from their online "contact us" section to let them know of the situation... on 11th I got a voice mail from dell telling me the cancellation process had completed and the refund has been issued and "have a nice day sir!!"..hahaha...
Gawddd they cant do ANYthing right... the communication gap is too much...

the Orion backpack itself is great... but is it worth £79 (before 2011 vat increase.. now it is £90)...?? well i dont think so but I wanted it...the issue now is that as they had already canceled the order, even if I wanted to keep it I might have to pay 90 instead of 79 (My guess not confirmed by dell)... which I really dont think its worth ($140...)... and I will be leaving by ~26th this month... haaa dell!!!

Checkpoint-friendly Orion backpack user here. Overall a nice backpack. Disappointed in the quality of the zippers inside the backpack. I had a zipper literally fall off upon first use and the threads started tearing apart. Exterior is top notch.

The only issue with the orion back pack when i compare it to my swissgear (now passed on to my gf)... that the latter has a leather bottom and even after heavy use it still looks brand new.... but the orion just has two rubber bushes and they look cheap in comparison.
