I've read threads talking about how you should charge it for 12 straight hours etc. I was wondering how optimize the battery and keep it healthy for as long as possible. Should I keep it in for the first 12/24 hours? Should I always discharge it fully? Any hints?

Your best bet is to take it out if the AW stays on your desk most of the time.

But it does not really matter. AW battery will not be charged when it's full and AC adapter is plugged in. That is kinda a standard for today notebooks or at least there is a similar feature on Macbook. Correct me if I'm wrong but I'm sure as hell I'm not wrong lol

There's always the slight recharging that happens when the battery drops below 100% but that's not going to murder your battery like some sources will have you believe. Its perfectly fine to leave the battery in to use it as a glorified UPS (hey why give up one of the advantages of having a laptop right?).

i say take it out............as a prime example.......my wifes laptop is 2 years old.....it has NEVER been taken of her little couch side table, and has always been plugged in......today i used the web cam to talk to gramma and walk around the house for a virtual tour...the battery bar said 100% charge....after exactly 11 mins the laptop turned off with a flat dead battery...so leaving it plugged in the last few years has ruined it.....

so if the laptop will mostly be on a desk...AND it will still run plugged in minus the battery id store the battery in the drawer till you need it........

Well, I'm going to be flying back and forth about 3 times/year and the flight is 4.5 hours, so I want to keep the battery in as good shape as possible so it can always last me the flight times. I want to know if its better to let it drain, or keep it high etc. Everywhere I check I hear different advice...

its best to when your not using a battery to keep it at about 50% charge when you decide to not use it.......

I've heard this from numerous folks. What's the reasoning behind it? I have a "beater" laptop atm, so I'm gonna charge, recharge, drain, etc all I want, but would the 50% be something I should do when I get my replacement?

    TYIA! :)

You can always use something like batterybar to monitor the wear on your battery and decide whether or not your habits are harmful.

Storage at 50% charge isn't a bad idea, but you won't get its benefit either of course. The R3's bios has a setting to disable charging designed for the very idea that a desktop replacement notebook doesn't go off the umbillical often.

As controverisal as the topic of batteries are, they are indeed designed to be in your computer at all times; else you'd have gotten a dummy "battery" for those times you put your battery into storage.

I believe the R3 uses a lithium battery, its not subject to the "memory" that people like to talk about. It can be recharged at any charge level without affecting performance. The only time you'd need to do a full discharge followed by a full recharge is when you suspect your battery meter is no longer accurate. This calibrates it. However...routinely running your battery to 0% is NOT something you should do all the time with a lithium battery.

You can fact check all this. Lithium batteries don't suffer from memory effect. How they do degrade is from heat generated by your computer and normal wear; even a battery that's never used and kept in storage only will eventually degrade.

who knows......i think basically a battery is designed to be charged then un plugged....even though they stop charging while plugged in and in use.when the laptop is off they are loosing some charge then being topped off again.......do that for a few years and its sure to ruin it

i would do the 50% for sure if you dont plan on using ir for a while. i have numerous hi power flashlights with wicked expensive batteries and i always store those batteries with 50% and some of them have lasted me for a few years now.........

What do you mean by 50%? Charge it to 50% then discharge to like 20% then charge again? Or charge to 60% then discharge to 40% and repeat?

@ the Cat: It maybe because your wifey's laptop is old and does not have the auto-detect whatever feature so it always uses battery power even when AC adapter is plugged in. There is no worse thing than draining and charging at the same time. Newer premium laptops have that feature thus the laptop will use AC adapter power and extremely slightly charge the battery to keep it at 100%.

The good thing you should do to keep battery healthy is to let it depleted completely once in a while then charge it straightly back to full with your lappy turned off.

So can we store it with 99% charge? Or does it have to hover around 50% for best results?
