I saw there was a thread on the m18x forum similar to this topic (what will be in the m18x r3).
I know its early, but it never hurts to think of the future.

Obviously there will be Haswell processors and the new generation of AMD and Nvidia GPU's (hopefully AMD will have better drivers the next time around, and Nvidia will have lower prices and better supply).
Ram and hard drives will basically be the same oc.

But what about other stuff like cosmetic, design, screen, and other hardware changes?
What do you want/think will be in the next m17x?

IMO, since it will be the fifth one, I could definitely see them shaking up the design a little bit. I think the lid design should be the same as the m18x. I like the single ridge going down the middle instead of the 2 indentations and I hope the new m17x will be thinner.
I hope they bring back the aluminum chassis (even though that's probably unlikely unfortunately).
I would LOVE it if they allowed dual GPU options (even if they were only mid range cards) like in the M17x r2. But thats probably just a dream.

I want them to take a note out of Asus's book and both the m17x and m18x start coming standard with a blue ray+CD combo drive.

I want keyboard flex and ghosting issues will be eliminated, and cooling to continue to improve, and I also hope there will be new screen options. Perhaps a return to RGB, or a 120 HZ non 3d screen.

Oh, and a thunderbolt port on the new AW laptops wouldn't hurt at all.

I think the next generation of AW laptops have a lot of potential!

i think you covered about everything id like to see.

    1. aluminum chassis
    2. dual video cards
    3. 120hz rgb
    4. thunderbolt ( or better ) port
    5. egpu dock - would be really great with a 15in with a midrange card. kinda be an either or with this and #2 for a 17in.

Idk, isn't there forum or dell website that has been taking in people's recommendations. If, so what has been real popular?

One of the most popular suggestions right now is adding more color options. I don't think anyone doesn't want that. I would love an AW in Nvidia green.

    1. Dual GPU's. That is why so many people refuse to give up their R2s.

    2. 1920x1200 120Hz RGB LED screen. The 1920x1200 RGB screen is the GREATEST reason I chose the Alienware of an XPS system.

    3. Swap out the Slot-load drives for a tray load. The slot-loads just don't operate well IMHO.

    4. Thunderbolt port...I know that even though Intel owns the rights to the T-Bolt, if they license or develop the port for anyone but Apple, Cupertino will sue Intel and stick 'em where the sun don't shine. But hey, we can always dream, yes?

    5. Aluminum chassis in Lunar Silver! Many Alien afficionados would like to see Silver, Green, white, and yellow in addition to Red and Black.

    6. Liquid cooling system  (I know that's like 10 years down the road!)

The Asus G series now has a thunderbolt port. If Asus can get it I am sure dell can work out how to as well.

I would like to see the ability to support two GPUs again and bring back the 1920x1200 RGB screen. I'm gonna just upgrade my GPU to a 7970M instead of upgrading to a new machine if I can manage that much. :p

I don't really mind the design much at the moment and dual GPUs may only be available in the M18x but we can all wish right?

I'm hoping for obviously metal chassis, multiple colours and proper RGB display. Synaptics have release some uber thin notebook keyboards so I'm hoping that maybe shaving a few mm off the thickness is a possibility. And finally a better resolution at least 2560x1440. The 2880x1800 one in the rMBP is 16:10 so if keeping the height of the resolution and te 16:9 ratio, we should be able to get 3200x1800 which would be amazing.

I would pay an obscene amount for a retina Alienware... Now we would just need another 175% increase in GPU performance to drive that many pixels in games! (if it can drive a 1920x1080 display at 60fps, it will drive a 3200x1800 screen at a mere 21.6 fps)

NKRO keyboard, it would have a monopoly on the market and be a huge item they could advertise. By the next gernation 1080p at 120hz should be something you cannot go without on every gaming laptop. So I think that it should be the standard option or be much cheaper and should be an option with either AMD or nVidia.

If all those wishes you guys have about the 'new' alienware 17", then what is the point on them coming up with the 18"? That was the purpose of the 18" and there is a reason behind all that, one of it and the most is the cooling issue; putting dual cards in this machines is not a joke and if the ventilation / space is not enough, that made a good reason for Dell / Alienware to come up with the 18".

Believe it or not, but probably if they ever change the 17", it will definitely be thinner and lighter...

You know what I would love to see with the R5? a revamped Dell system so that there is actually half decent support from them.

    M17X R5 wishlist:

    1) Chiclet keyboard similar to that of Sony Vaio or Macbooks for easier cleaning. Generally a flatter keyboard surface area.
    2) Move the mouse track pad to the centre!!!
    3) Remove VGA port for DVI or Thunderbolt. It'll be 2013 when R5 will be out so come on no more VGA!
    4) An even more professional rather than gaming look would be nice. Actually it would be great.
    5) 1080p (improved quality, colour gamut etc) & Blu-ray come as standard.
    5) Please don't let the world end in 2012.

Yeah. 1080P REALLY should come standard on the m17x. Blue ray should to, but I can live with it staying an 'upgrade" I guess...

Returning the m17x to its former glory (super awesome screen, aluminum chassis, and SLI) should be the goal.

The m18x should continue to be the Ultimate though. perhaps adding TRI SLI or TRI XFIRE options, more ram, and a some other boosts.

Also an overall more reliable system would be appreciated too as high end gadgets like this go wrong all the time

We already pay an obscene amount for our Alienwares. Add in a retina LCD and we'd probably be pushing $4K-$5K. It would be more practical to put a Thunderbolt port instead of a DVI or VGA. It also couldn't hurt to remove the 1394 port as well. I haven't used that in years.

Matte screens have notoriously bad color reproduction. However, with that said. Alienware screens ARE matte they just have a plastic/plexiglass panel over them making them LOOK glossy.

And I'm still waiting for my m17x r4 to come with the 7970m in just under 2 weeks!!!!! I think a matte screen option would be great, full hd as standard....

Don't think they'll make it sli though, that's what the m18x is for. That'll just add more bulk + weight because people who just want a single gpu option - the majority would prefer a smaller laptop. Since the m18x has room for dual gpu's due to it's bigger case.

But I won't be looking at getting a new laptop for around 3 years I hope :p

So i think it'll just have the new components + will be that little bit thinner + lighter, full hd as standard, possibly a matte screen option, and maybe 12gb ram standard? So many gaming laptops are getting 12 / 16gb standard now. Possibly a 750 gb hd should come standard too, as well as a small msata for faster boot times :)

    1. Bezel instead of E2E
    2. Aluminum/Metal Chassis!
    3. Dual GPUs like the original M17x's (wishful thinking)

Assuming #1 and #2 are met, I'd highly consider going to a r5. Can't stand these plastic/rubber/carbon fiber chassis. I'm perfectly cool with my M15x weighing ~10lbs (+4kg)

    Hmm,

1200p RGB LED screen, when are they gonna realize that people are not gonna switch from R2 to crappier screen
    Gorilla glass cover no plexi
Slimmer chassis would be nice. The display doesn't need to be that bulky - see the ultrabooks
Easier access to CPU, GPU, RAM, HDD
    2 GPUs
Forget the DVD/Blu Ray drives, shove something else there or make it less bulky, everything is digital now - CDs are the past
    Liquid cooling would be nice

Although I am really happy AW isn't chiclet style. AW PLEASE NEVER GO CHICLET/ISLAND style keyboard!!!

I think the Keyboard in the M17x is perfect. Just remove the slight flex and it will be 101% amazing.

I "hope" but know it won't happen:

    • hex core CPU with 12mb cache
    • Radeon w/ 4gb DDR5
    • 6 "mini" display port connections (this has been supported since the HD5000m series mobile video cards), 1 HDMI in/1 HDMI out - No VGA
    • CPU Support for 4x 16gb Ram
    • 6 USB 3.0 ports
    • Support for 15mm hard drives
    • Blue Ray burner (Sager already offers this in their M17x R4's as an option)
    • A docking port and docking station so I don't have to plug in and un plug everything every time I go mobile on the road and come home.
    • The choice to ship it with out any storage so I can pick the storage options I want (Samsung 830's) or 840 Pro's

the R4 I just bought is a desktop replacement for me, so that is how my list is built

Yeah, a dual GPU M17X with a 1920x1200 display would be awesome. I also would like if they went back to the anodized aluminum. Basically an R2 but with current hardware, hehe.

    My must-have design improvements:
    • carbon fiber casing/framing to reduce weight
    • improved keyboard keys layout
    • more solid material/design around the keyboard; current plastic is really too soft
    • larger status lights (top left corner)
    • addition of x2 USB 3.0 ports at the back
    • docking port and station
    • liquid cooling
    • BDRW
    • IPS display
    • cameraless
