I'm trying to keep the cost relatively low on the m17x r3 that I'm going to purchase soon but I'm not sure which upgrade would be more worth my money. So its either:
    2720QM+6870M, or possibly GTX460M
    or
    2630QM+6970M

I'm definitely upgrading to the 60hz 1080p screen
Also i'm going to buy a SSD separately to put my OS on and some major applications.

Just what are your opinions of which combo would be best? notable differences between the CPU+GPU combos? Which is more worth the money?

Definately go with the 2630 + 6970 in my opinion. While the jump from 2630 to 2730 is a good one, the jump from 6870 to 6970 is even better (for gaming at least).

Agreed, assuming you do not want 3D (460M).
If you can squeek the 2730, that would be ideal!

Completely agree with Jestare opinion...go for the 2630 + 6970 combo. This is assuming you're gaming and no 3D. Like the SSD, buy any extra memory afterward; stick with the 4GB.

2630 with the 6970m imo, 3D is still relatively new and more of a gimmick. However many people are quite pleased with their 3D so who knows.

If I weren't getting the 460m for the 3D, I would have gotten the 6970. I don't mean to sound redundant, but like others have mentioned, stick with stock ram/hdd and upgrade it yourself afterwards. Be sure to keep the stock ones somewhere however, in case of warranty issues.

I want to keep it under 1800 but I definitely want it to be worth it if I'm spending that kind of money
