Ok so i should probably get the history out the way, A while back (a month ago) I kinda sorta killed my m17x r3 mobo and display, Lets not ask how they were killed only that they were. So forward ahead into time i have a replacement display and mobo...

    My original specs
    1080p display
    2630qm
    6990m
    16GB ddr3 1600mhz
    blahblahblah

    My current specs
    900p display
    core i5 2450m
    8GB ddr3 1600mhz
    6990m

Heres the issue, Whenever i put my 2630qm in(wich works fine in a differant laptop) It won't detect the 6990m at all, However the IGP sort of works by sort of works, Until the driver is installed for Hd 3000 i get random artifacts on screen, after the driver is installed everything works fine.

If i use my 2450m, It detects the 6990m but the 6990m won't function correctly unless IGP is disabled, Otherwise it will ~never~ leave low power clocks 100/150mhz, When IGP is disabled and using the 2450m the 6990m works like a charm. So to repeat

2630QM> No 6990m at all not even in the bios
2450m> 6990m is detected but doesnt work propely until IGP is disabled.

So what have i broken, The 6990m or the 2630qm, The 2450m was never originally shipped with the m17x r3 was it? as in offered on the website, Mine shipped with the 2630qm obviously.

Oh and OS is windows 7 x64

It did it with A04 wich was on the board that i got, So i went up to A12 unlocked still does it, Vbios on the 6990m has never been changed and never had issues on the previous mobo, It's stock dell.

From what I read here IGP doesnt really work for any of the 2 CPU's so we can say that that that is either an issue with: Drivers, motherboard or the graphics card, both cpu's broken or power
2630qm works fine in another laptop and IGP works too without artifacts. --> Drivers, motherboard, graphics card or power
new mobo --> Drivers, graphics card or power
installed exactly like you should?--> Graphics card or power

So it is the graphics card or it is the power! But don't jump to conclusions because we only know what triggers the problems but not what is causing it. It sounds to me though there is a problem with power.

2630qm--> 45W TDP --> no detection at all
2450m-->35W TDP --> detection but only works in high clocks with IGP disabled
Give us which PSU you have and also the P/N on the backside

    You can try this:

Since the 2630qm works perfect in another laptop the CPU is not the problem.
So if you take video card out and you have still problems with the 2630qm then something wrong with the laptop besides the CPU or GPU.

But watch out if the problems do disappear it doesn't mean the graphics card is faulty. It could have indirectly caused the problems. We can only rule out the graphics card if the problems persist after it has been removed.

On top of what L_Porras has suggested, does your AC adapter tip wiggle in the DC jack? I've seen sometimes a loose DC jack will make the laptop think it's not plugged in and will throttle CPU/GPU to unusable levels.

could be a weird glitch. My 6990m I bought to replace my 460m and my original motherboard wouldn't detect the card. I got the mobo swapped under warranty for a different problem and then it detected the card fine. Not sure why it does that. :(

Same PSU that came with my m17x r3 its the big brick thingy mabob, The 2630qm works fine on it's own, The 6990m isn't detected if i start with battery running only, So it's definatly not a power distribution issue, I can safely rule out the psu, It can't be drivers because the 6990m isn't detected in the bios when the 2630qm is installed, Only when the 2450m is.

Note that the 6990m works mostly fine with the 2450m, Ie i can start on battery and on power and it's detected, It isn't detected with either method with the 2630qm.
