You can see my rig in my signature....when i got this laptop, the new big thing was sandybridge I know there is always a better graphic card right around the corner but what about core system? What is the next bigh thing and when is it due out? And what is it all about?

I dont think upgrading my R3/6970 is needed untill some thing really big hits the market.

The next big thing will be when Alienware redesigns again. For example, last year, the M15x was stopped, the R3 replaced it and the M18x replaced the R2. A few years before that, when Dell acquired AW, the product lines changed dramatically. Perhaps in a another year or two, we may see the death of the M17x completely and there will be a M16x and M18x because currently I think the size difference between the M17x R3 and M18x is small compared to the R3 vs M14x. Who knows.

there is nothing BIG coming nowadays, 600m family maybe the next good thing, but I wouldn't call it big, I think (and nowadays people started to suggest too) that 600m is about 10-20% faster than 500m, ivy bridge is the same as sandy bridge but lower power consumption

I'm gonna wait till the next revision of alienware laptops to acquire a new machine Because it doesn't look like anything revolutionary is going to be released. The only other upgrades I really want at this point are to maybe snag both a 2920 and a 1080p screen at some point, but i'm not in a hurry. :)

As long as currency is involved, technology will always just move incrementally. If the next 'big' thing isn't enough of a step ahead, people will stick with what they've got. If the step ahead is too big, then the companies exhaust their research. Technology will always be like a morphine drip; not enough to make you black out, but just enough to keep you interested.

Now, after that entirely-too-long blurb, I would just say to go with what satisfies your needs and fits within your budget. Nothing that hasn't been said before.
