What protects your alienware laptop?
Avast
Windows Firewall
Malware Bytes
Avira
Norton Antivirus
etc...
and do they work well together?
-
I use Microsoft Security Essentials. Free, doesn't do crap I don't want it to do, doesn't slow down my system, works wonderfully, and did I mention free?
I don't torrent, but if you do, I'd suggest something more aggressive than Microsoft's offering. -
Bit Defender Internet Security 2013
-
NOD32. Clean interface, very low system resource hog and intelligent scanning of internet usage as well.
Also warranty protects my laptop
-
MSE for the win. Seriously, it is worth paying the money for a legit copy of windows every single time just to keep Microsoft Security Essentials. (though I don't know why you would pirate it for a laptop that already comes with windows in the first place)
Never had a single virus with it, and it doesn't ever really take up more than .01% CPU (except when scanning at 4 am, of course) -
I use AVG security business edition 2012, It works how it's suppose to and haven't had any viruses or problems with it.
Before AVG i used to have MSE and it also worked perfectly and never got a virus with it. -
norton was voted best last year i think
-
Microsoft Security Essentials. Free, and does not take much CPU usage. I do torrents but only a few limited sources that I've been using them for a long time.
I used to use NOD32. That was before MSE came out. NOD32 runs quite silent and does it jobs pretty well, but I can't really keep up with their crappy 2 years subscription. -
Just MSE. on both an M17X and an old M9750
-
I have avaste free! installed.. but I don't really use it.. I have it installed just in case some day one virus gets on my computer..
-
I use Microsoft Security Essentials and download hell of stuff 24/7 via torrents etc.
MSE is pretty great and light app, never had any problem with this antivirus. -
MSE for years.
-
bigtonyman Desktop Powa!!!
I use MSE as well. Works great and stays out of the way.
-
McAfee here. No complaints at all.
-
Norton Internet Security
-
Microsoft Security Essentials. Been using this since it came out and never has any issues and I use torrents.
-
MSE, everything else is .
-
Norton Internet Security and common sense.
-
I use Norton.
-
MSE (Microsoft Software Essentials) or rather Windows Defender in Windows 8, as it got (rather confusingly enough) renamed is sufficient for my notebook's security.
-
CptXabaras Overclocked, Overvolted, Liquid Cooled
Microsoft Security Essential since long time.
-
avast and comodo firewall. both free and barely used, just there as "reassurance"
-
Microsoft Security Essentials currently but have a copy of Norton 2011 i think that i cba installing as my laptop is going receive repairs on monday
-
MSE, MAM and super-anti spyware free edition to clear out the tracking cookies.
-
Bitdefender Total Security 2013. I have used Bitdefender for a few years now and have not had any problems. (knock on wood)
-
I protect the inside with Norton. I protect everything on the outside with my Winchester.
-
I use AVG free edition. Least intrusive, good protection, free.
-
I actually have always enjoyed NIS, but once the subscription ran out, a few years ago, i havent looked back eversince i shifted to MSE and MBAM
-
NIS IS the virus !
-
Never touching Norton ever again. My personal experience has been horrible and it impossible to uninstall! That being said, it was a few years back and they may have got their game together and if people are using it without issue then I guess it's alright. Either way, NOD32 has served me extremely well and I will use it for as long as I use Win7. If or when I go to Win8, then I might stick to just Defender and SE.
-
Nowadays I don't even think an anti Virus is necessary, I ran win7 without it for a whole year, didn't run into anyproblems, got Avira and didn't find any. As long as you watch out what site you go into and don't click suspicious ads there won't be any problems. ABP helps too. For Virus protection windows will do.
-
Naaw man, tried quite a few AV's and imho must tell you NIS 2009 onwards has been great, before that, horribe.. Methinks it surprised a few reviewer-s in the recent years....my most hated would be MCAFEE, lord...dell au. is adamant in bundling the wretched av in their alienware rigs, and that too for a 15 mo. subscription... Last run in was with the m17 r3's, the bloomin' thing used to crash a perfect running os as soon as the protection " protocols" activated.....
-
Norton is not memory conserving, ie. it's a memory hog, ie. it has a sizable memory footprint, compared to other lighter free alternatives ( * hint * AVG * hint * ). This is what makes it undesirable software. That's as good as any virus gets IMO!
-
Avast Internet Security
-
Haha this is so true.
I have MSE just for the safe of my mind. At least I have something in case I get virus. But the last time I got a virus is like 5-6 years ago... -
Norton is the worst of all of them, in my opinion. It bogs down your computer over time. I'll probably use Microsoft Security Essentials for a while.
-
Well, believe it or not, crApafee is more of a resource hog, plus it is not as effective as most of its competitors, and lacks some of the most basic configuration controls. No way for the user to configure an exception for false positives. So, maybe Norton is a close second on the crapola scale. It's definitely bloated and too much of a resource hog compared to the alternatives.
MSE works great. That's what I am using on most of my systems. AVG, Avast and Avira free editions are also decent alternatives. I am running a lifetime subscription of Vipre on my M18x and really like it, too. I was NOD32 user for a long time and thought it was excellent, too. -
I use Mcafee the 15 month subscription through dell. I have had no issues and no complaints. It works great. But also keep in mind, my Alienware is used only to play games. No downloading, movie watching, web surfing, online shopping, nothing but games. So it stays safe. I have my old laptop for all the surfing and stuff.

Virtual sandbox X64 support for testing & sandboxed firefox Sandboxie - Sandbox software for application isolation and secure Web browsing, NIS 2012 Impact of the security software on the usability of the whole computer scored 5, industry average is 10 (lower better) AV-TEST - The Independent IT-Security Institute: May/Jun 2012

Come on guys. Seriously? Stop having exclusive alienware threads in the alienware forum just for the hell of it. Unless your actually gathering statistics or something. Just my view on this thread.
And no I'm not butt hurt from not having an alienware. -
I simply think of this topic as a general question. The OP wanted to see what kind of antivirus programs others are using. And it just happens to be in this forum because the OP may be an AW owner. Why the need to make such a fuss about this?
-
Ditto, ditto, ditto. I've had to remove McAfee from so many systems because it causes software hangups and BSODs like crazy. NIS has gotten very good in recent years. I've used all the the ones out there (Kapersky, Norton, MSE, McAfee, AVG, Avast) and the only ones that actually protected my system from intrusions are Norton, Kapersky, and MSE. Kapersky got to be too expensive, and I would have stayed with MSE, but every year Amazon offers NIS on special; $20 for the 3-license download. So that's what I've been using since 2008. The only complaints about NIS are one, can at times be a memory hog...i.e. when it is scanning or updating. Two, it tends to hang for a few seconds on shutdown. But I can live with both those knowing I have some sort of guarantee from Symantec.
-
NIS 2013 resource hog.
:hi2:
Edit : NIS 2013 is a complete disaster, my previous post was from the first day, after many tests I found that it takes ages to load and does unprotected it triggers GPU P-State 0 so 580m doesn't idle anymore.
NIS 2012 is the good one, it seems 2013 won't be a good year for Symantec Metro Retro 2008 -
Microsoft Security Essential
Simple, routine updates, and most importantly - it is free. -
Banished Angel Notebook Consultant
Windows Firewall, AVG Anti Virus free edition, Spybot Search & Destroy. It's a bit of a mix and match, but it's all free and has never let me down in the years i've used them.

Why would anyone want to know specifically what other alienware users are using for antivirus? It doesn't make sense. Yes, this is a general question which should be in the general forum, the correct subforum being Computer Security Forum, Antivirus
Obviously everyone who posts in the above subforum is a toshiba, dell, hp user, but they don't post in their manufacturer subforum.
Antivirus programs don't run better on one brand and worse on another.
I'm not making a fuss but I've seen threads like this before, like, "lets have a question that anyone with a laptop could answer but lets make it exclusive to alienware users for no reason". -
SlickDude80 Notebook Prophet
i also use comodo firewall, but i also use comodo antivirus as well. you gotta love enterprise level protection that is free for personal use
