Ok, so you'll have to forgive me if this is confusing, but I'm at a loss as to how to explain the problem. I'll do my best, though.
I bought my m17x a few months ago, a refurb with which I've had no major problems (yay!). There is, however, one thing that's annoying the heck out of me and I can't seem to fix it.
When I type, whether it be in a text box in a web browser, a chat client, word processor, ANYTHING - if I don't sit the mouse cursor directly to the right of where I am typing (and subsequently move it when my text goes down a line), the text cursor will suddenly reposition itself so that I continue typing in the middle of things I've already written.
I've tried re-installing the touchpad drivers and unplugging my external mouse and if I remember correctly, I've formatted the system at least once and the problem remains.
If anyone can shed some light on this issue, or point me in the right direction to fix it, that would be awesome.

Two things come to mind:
You've activated some sort of Windows setting - maybe accessability or something - that does what you're saying.
OR
You've got a broken touchpad button, that keeps making contact and "clicking", moving the curor. If this were happening though, it wouldn't just be with text boxes, so I'm thinking the first is more likely.
Have a look through Windows' mouse and accessability settings. -
Does the same behavior happen with touch pad and external mouse? In either case you may want to see if snap to is turned on. Snap to is in your mouse setting and is the only thing I can think of that may unintentionally move the mouse.

I used to see this a lot at work with laptop users, to the point of accidentally wiping out an entire word doc. Sometimes was an accidental brushing of the touchpad, and a few occasions a defective touchpad.

thing that crossed my mind and may help you: try loading a shooter like black ops or CSS and speculate with pressing keys either on chat or out of chat, try to use your touchpad buttons, how well do they react to touching, if you don't find hardware problems to it - see the windows mouse options. ALSO and this can be a no-brainer: make sure you do not put your hands on the touchpad, that happens a lot to me when i type a lot of text i can accidentally put my left wrist on touchpad and wipe half the text there or start writing at where cursor is... hope this helps

I'm gonna echo what the 2 previous posters said. You may just be accidentally brushing against the touchpad. You may want to lower the touchpad sensitivity.
What the hell, laptop?
