I've never had an SSD before but would like to get one for my new M17x R3. What would be a good, but cheap SSD? Also, would I just put it in the empty bay? Or do i have to switch my Hard drive to the empty bay and put the SSD in the Hard drive's spot?

Unless you want every last bit of the the seconds from the SSD, just about any with above average score will do fine. You can check Anandtech or any other website for recommendations. There are quite a few of them.

You want to put the SSD on HDD0 and HD on HDD1 slots. The tag on the hard drive bracket is label unless it's missing or switched.

SSD in the HDD0 port since the other one has issues with SATA 3. These are the 2 SSDs i will recommend - Intel 510 series and Crucial M4.
Stay away from OCZ or any other Sandforce based stuff.

I put in an Intel 510 series 120gb and I've been very happy for the week or so since I've done it.

The 320 series is a little cheaper (but only by about $20-30), but those are SATA II (3gb) instead of SATA III (6gb).

I have seen lot of ppl using Vertex 3 n Intel 510 on this forum. I ordered mine with 256 GB SSD from Dell. Its a Samsung PM 810 model and I should say I am extremely happy with it.

It all depends on how much is ur budget at the end of the day! haha

I've read so far the Intel 510 has no problem installing.

The Crucial M4 needs the LMP fix to work flawlessly. Not sure if it will work in port 0, but switching is no biggy right?

Vertex 3 is damn fast, needs LMP fix and needs to be installed in port 1 instead of 0. Vertex is seems to be a little less realible, but cant find any topics lately reporting it failed. If you go with Vertex 3 make sure you can exhange if you are not happy with it.

See if you can buy a 256GB version. After installing everything you will have about 90-95GB free space left.

Wow they are more expensive than I thought they would be....Would it be a good investment? Or is it passable?

SSD is the best upgrade you can do to any computer, period. EVERYTHING becomes so much faster. Load times, opening up apps, searching for stuff... ridiculously fast.

Amen. I bought a gskill falcon ssd back in the days just because I felt a little affluent. I couldn't go back to mechanical drives after that.
