Being not really updated/knowlegable into GPU, and im in the market on purchasing an alienware is kinda confusing. Being that said i want to know if im purchasing the right one for me.
Why is the R9 m290x configuration is much chceaper than the Gtx 860m being that the AMD have a 4GB of gddr5 compared to 2GB of the 860m? I checked the comparison on the GPU BOSS and the AMD is better performing than the nvidia on this.

If i get the R9 m290m instead of the 860m will that benifit me if im gonna run 3d software programs like Maya? Thanks

Honestly, I'm not sure why it's so much cheaper, now granted the AMD could be called a rebrand of a rebrand of a rebrand...but Nvidia does the same thing as well. The R9 m290x is basically just the HD 8970M. Driver support is a BIG one that I always read about with AMD, for instance the R9 M290X isn't even officially supported by AMD, but the newer drivers still work, it just changes the name of your device to the HD 8970M. I choose the AMD because of the price and because the card is no slouch by any means, but most folks will tell you to go with Nvidia.

If you're worried about drivers then go with nvidia... And not the 860m!

Because it doesn't beat other cards like the 780M and if your in gaming then you need the best... The 860m just isn't the right stuff. 880m is too overpriced for what is essentially an over clocked 780M and with an unlocked vbios available for the 780M you can clock it faster than the 880m at stock.

But whatever GPU you get is up to you.

Good choice sir! (said in creepy waiter voice :D)

AMD's are historically much cheaper and I think of it this way: AMD's are an enthusiast card, they performs somewhat better in gaming (usually) and much better in like-for-like in things like Folding, but drivers can take some expert knowledge to get the best combo.

Nvidia's target is more mainstream, (and priced to market) at the gamers that don't want to become an expert in all the settings or messing with uninstalling drivers before upgrading them :(. You have an add-on called 'Experience' that looks after individual options based on your preference and GPU, and you get to see all your game settings with example screen shots showing you just what they do all in one place :D. These are automatically updated frequently :).

It's not fully developed to it's best right now and the last few NV drivers have not been a great success, but they seem to be almost back to the point they were around one year ago - IMO :D

Spec wise the 780M and the 880m are just downclocked versions of the desktop GTX 680, so if you can overclock it to the same speeds you're looking close to matching a desktop GTX 680.
