A little background - my secondary graphics card has been making grinding sounds from the fan for about two weeks now. I didn't really worry about it too much because I don't use SLi all that often and the graphics card was staying at around 68 idle. I would have replaced the fan sooner but the instructions for opening this sucker up looked extremely complicated and I was afraid I was going to break it.
Anyway I opened up this thing today because my primary graphics card was hitting 107C in one of my games and throttling itself. I cleaned out both heatsinks and fans. I was hoping this would fix the second fan as well but it did not.
Now that I know the instructions are needlessly complicated (it really wasn't that hard to do once I got the screws loose - I think loosening those for the first time was the hardest part of the whole thing), I want to find a replacement for the right fan. I was hoping something was just obstructing it but nothing was that I observed unless its something inside of the fan itself. With this being my only machine I really don't want to mess with it too much.
Oh and I'm glad I cleaned it out... Furmark for 7 minutes maxed at 69C on the first card where it was hitting 107 and throttling before.

I'd try ringing up Dell if I were you mate, they usually have old parts like this.

try this one here:
F605N | Alienware M17x RIGHT-side Fan/Heatsink Working Pull
they got all kinds of replacement parts for a lot of dell laptops. Even GFX cards and stuff -
For some reason the secondary card fan on the R2 is faulty and makes noises. A lot of people have had them replaced by Dell including me. If under warranty still it will be covered. If not, call them up and get the part number, then try and find it online or order it from them. It will be pretty cheap.
Edit: looks like nicolaibaun found it. All I found were card/fan combos on ebay. -
I actually did manage to find the F605N... interesting thing though... some are made by AVC (what I currently have) but there is another M17x F605N that is made by Delta - the construction looks better than the AVC fan. Does anyone have experience with the Delta fans? I can get one for 23 bucks rather than 50 and I have never heard of AVC before but I certainly have heard of Delta - they used to make great power supply fans.
If I can get that second fan replaced then bump the memory up to 8GB, flash the 260Ms to their reference voltages and speeds (these actually both bumped to 280M speeds stable when I first got the machine), grab a Q9200 chip, and get the secondary hard drive caddy and stick another drive in there this machine will last me for awhile yet. I need to find a new LCD housing though because somehow I scratched mine. -
Delta makes some of the best cooling fans for numerous applications. I would choose them over AVC in a heartbeat.
