I just got an email from dell ups tracking regarding the delivery of my system and upon checking it, it seemed to originate from shanghai china. it's taking 4 days to ship to UK.

Im currently in the UK, and AFAIK, dell's got a assembling facility in Ireland, and UK manufacturing are normally serviced by Ireland facility.

Can M17x owners here turn your alienware to the back, check and see where is your gaming built? also, please state your country, and the built quality when you received it too. thanks.

not really. i know most of the inner parts are made in china. im talking about assembly place, which dell/alienware will specify and it's labeled as "Made in xxxx". For example, IntenseIGFX said his M17x is being shipped from TN, USA, which means that machine is made/assembled in USA factory.

i also want to know if it's normal for UK alienware M17x to be shipped all the way from china, and not somewhere nearer like Ireland or EU

yeah, Malaysia is the assembly facility for South East Asia region sold laptops. Try turning over your M17x and see if there's any label that says "Made in xxx". im not sure if there's any because mine is in transit now. will take 4 days to reach UK. which country are u from to get a Malaysian built laptop?

thanks for your feedback. mine is shipped from china as well. probably this is normal for alienware then. it's still a bit wierd though. assembling it so far away and transporting it to the west. my dell laptop is actually made in Ireland, which gave me the idea that UK alienware is also built there.

I think mine was delivered by Star Trek or someone.

Tenn is where the replacements ship from. I am not aware of regular systems being build and shipped from there. The replacement build team puts the units together from Latin American systems.

It most certainly does not imply that. AFAIK they are all assembled somewhere in Asia where they are doing it for $1/day or whatever :p and then shipped to the rest of the world, e.g. US.

    Check the Dell order thread:

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/alienware/457512-how-tell-your-real-dell-order-status.html

Mine is "Made in China" (where else ^^). The build quality was good when it arrived. After 4 months or so it's falling apart tho.

EDIT: Sorry just noticed this is the m17x thread ^^ build quality is great what else.... well apart from slight keyboard flex. It would be even better if it was full metal like macbooks.

Flextronics is all over the world including Tennessee. The partnership the have with Dell/Alienware is a bit convoluted. The general consensus is that it's made out of Chinese Flextronics plants.

I was going to say mine shipped from TN.

designed in the West, made in the East, even the overpriced junk that apple sells is made in China. The costs to manufacture in the US or any other such country would be a lot more expensive. If you want your products made here, you should expect another 30-40% premium for it.

Replacements out of Tenn are Latin American units with US keyboards and OS's added they are not refurbs didn,t say that. It is where the put the orders for replacements together, based on what your Rep and you agree. Except for the teams final say based on parts supply. They are considered as new and sent as such.

I remember back in the day all Apple computers were made in Japan. I guess now everything has shifted to China for cost cutting and we're used to cheaply made products that wear down extremely fast. That's the way of the future unfortunately.

That's why Dell has a 21-day return policy. Your CC has already been charged, so refusing it is actually the worst thing you can do, as your credit from Dell would take longer than normal since you didn't follow the correct RMA procedure.

Refusing a package is not always the best way. Just take it, and take your 21-days to check it out fully, because on day 22, you have no options.

oh no, im not thinking of returning it, at least not till i try it out and decide if i liked it. it's just about safety issues. i've heard people saying that after they signed for their delivery and open up the package, there is just (and i swear to God i didnt make this up) a brick inside. no laptop, just a brick to make the box feel heavy. that's why im a bit concerned now.

Well then, take a picture of the pretty brick in the box and tell Dell you want a full refund.

If you are that worried about it, when the UPS, FED EX driver shows up, open it up in front of the driver, it would take less than 30 seconds.
Whatever makes you HAPPY that what it all about, right?
I did that when dealing with people or companies I did not know, I opened it up in front of my house in my driveway, I don't care what the driver thinks. so there.

My M17xR2 was made (parts are probably from many places) in China. It was ordered new and shipping started in TN (based on Dell and FedEx tracking).
I also have a Precision M6400 which was made (again, parts are probably from all over the world) in Ireland.

When i ordered my M17, the tech was based in Dell factory in Penang, Malaysia. According to him, the factory currently builds all precision models and some desktop models. They used to build XPS as well but because of logistic issues, all laptops except the precision range are built in China.

It makes sense because its much better to have centralized production. I guess the precision production is maintained in Malaysia because most of its components are industry certified and not subject to frequent model change cycles that most consumer laptops go through.

Both my R1 and R2 were made in China.

My R1 was shipped from China to the Netherlands to Germany then to the UK.

My R2 was shipped from China to South Korea to Kazakhstan, to Poland to Germany to the UK.

In both cases via UPS. It took UPS about 30 hours to get my R2 from Shanghai to my doorstep!
