Hi everyone, I recently picked up a 2nd 5870 off of ebay without the screws that attach them to the skeleton/frame etc. Any idea what size they are and where I could get them? Radioshack? Also, I am doing the "ultimate/supreme cooling mod", should I get washers and what size or bend the c clips? Im actually unsure as to how this is going to work out, I hope to have a better idea when I am inside this thing.

Hey man Congrats on the purchase, If you purchase a secondary Fan it comes with one screw for the secondary GPU. (you only really need 1 screw as they dont move at all) The cooling mod is unnescessary if you use High performance Thermal Paste and Pads, I didnt do the mod and my temps never get above 75' which is fine thermal limit is like 110'c( I think) I used Fujipoly thermal Pads and Tuniq TX-4 thermal paste, but if you insist on doing the mod the clips are on the bottom of the X frame that the heatsink screws into. You do risk the chance of cracking your GPU die as well, Honestly I would just try to do the pads and paste first, and then if you are not happy go for the Clip mod.

Here is a link to the pads:
    Fujipoly Premium Thermal Pad - VGA Block - 60 x 50 x 1.0 - Thermal Conductivity 6.0 W/mK - FrozenCPU.com

    and the paste(that I use)
    Tuniq TX-4 High Performance Thermal Grease - 3.0g | Product Review | Page 1 - FrozenCPU.com

To make the TX-4 easier to apply just set it next to a lightbulb for 20 minutes.

Mkelliniy, thanks for all the help with this, Im unsure as to whether the fan will come with screws as its from the same seller who gave me this screw size to source them separately: M2.5xL5

Any idea as to where I could get that size? Also, Im interested in doing what you did in terms of cooling, I dont want to run the risk of cracking my GPU's. Could I just do everything outlined in the "ultimate/supreme cooling mod" minus fiddling with the c-clips? Meaning, could I must apply AS5 to the GPU and TX-3 to the RAM? Why did you add Fujipoly Thermal Pads? How did you tape up your heat vents?

Also, I read your instructions as to how to OC' my CPU, Im interested, how long have you been doing this, do you think it is safe? How do I contact the OC' master you recommended in the other post, through here?

What should I do once I get the additional GPU in in XF mode programming wise? Should I uninstall and reinstall CCC? Should I update BIOS? I really dont know how to do this, I looked but it appears there isnt much info on it.

Alright questions about the Cooling Mod

I used Fujipoly Pads on the RAM(no paste) of the cards, I used TX-4 on my GPU die, also I used no tape, as for the Fan it will have one screw unless they took it out because the card screws into the fan. You may wanna repaste and pad the CPU area as well. .5MM pads should be good for the 5870's and the CPU mosfets. (You will see them when you take off the CPU heatsink) also becareful of the area where the CPU heatpipe is open and touches the XF cable just dont take the glue cover off there. I posted this in the other thread, but I will post it again here The reason why you can't put paste on the RAM without the C-clip mod is because the gap is to big. The Thermal Pads fill that gap, and the ones I linked have a thermal rating of 6.0 W/mk which is better/or similar to most good thermal pastes.

For the Set FSB program go here SetFSB_HomePage
and click the donate button. Donate 500 yen= 5 dollars to ABO-san and he will send you unlimited activation keys. SetFSB has been around for years so don't worry. I have been overclocking ever since I found out I could about 5-8 months I think. It is safe as long as your STABLE and your temps are Good, this will shorten the life span a tiny bit, but judging by the average lifespan of a CPU it's not a dramatic decrease. (you will get some BSOD's occasionally if you push it too high but for the most part I am stable at 1.812 GHZ or a BCLK of 166.) If you are stable in windows but not stable in games etc. Try raising voltages in the bios for CPU then RAM if needed. To find your max Overclock go in increments of 2 and stress test for 20 minutes using orthos: http://www.overclock.net/attachments/downloads/36840d1165737486-orthos-orthos_exe_20060420.zip checking temps using HWINFO32: http://www.hwinfo.com/download32.html (honestly though you should be able to have a BCLK like this [IMG] off the bat then go up from there

For your GPU you should Uninstall and reinstall the Stock Dell Drivers Drivers and Downloads and make sure your secondary GPU is up to date with the lates VBIOS Drivers and Downloads

If your Vbios is the same as this screenie: [IMG] Don't Flame me for using the ROG skin for gpu-z it looks cool :p

then you do not have to do the VBIOS update, before you do anything though tell me what version Driver are you using? If you need to install the VBIOS follow the directions from this page

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/ali...70-september-2010-incl-vbios-flash-guide.html

Before you download the Dell stock drivers though make sure you have the latest VBIOS using GPU-z techPowerUp! :: Downloads

EDIT: If you need screws you can get a set here http://cgi.ebay.com/SET-SCREWS-DELL...opAccess_RL&hash=item45f9cda150#ht_3651wt_905

Thank you for the help! My present driver is: 8.791.0.0 (catalyst 10.11)

I heard ATI has a new catalyst driver out, 11.5? Should I move to 11.4 or .5 now or after I am in XF mode?

Are you using the Fujipoly in conjunction with paste or alone?

Is there a difference between the 920xm (QS) CPU's on ebay and OEM chipsets?

Yeah I think I might skip the tape idea too, Im interested in seeing testing with and without the tape. If I remember correctly youre achieving similar temperature reductions with the pads and no tape?

As for the screws that are missing, it is the following size m2.5x5 which are available online but not locally. Do you think I could take one from somewhere else within the laptop?

Thanks again. There should be a donate button in our sigs!

Upgrade after you install the new card first verify the VBIOS.

From what I understand ES and QS mean Engineering sample and Qualification sample, not a difference. (someone else can correct me here) Don't worry though they are just as good.

No pads and Paste are not good. It's always either one or the other.

Im telling you the fan comes with a screw but sure you can take one off the magnesium frame without any worries.

How do I verify VBIOS? Should I update ATI catalyst to 11.5 or 11.4?

Oh hey, can you recommend an SSD? I heard there can be some issues? Im gonna look for the one in your sig now. It seems like an easy install?

There are better SSD's out there than the one I got OCZ Vertex drives are good and alot better than mine.
